How Burna Boy risked paying £150k fine for delaying his performance at London stadium

Burna Boy, the acclaimed Nigerian musician and Grammy award winner, demonstrated his commitment to perfection during his recent concert at the London stadium. The head of security at the venue revealed that Burna Boy insisted on a delay in his performance because the backdrop for the stadium was not functioning properly.

According to the security official, Burna Boy was prepared to take the stage when one of his team members, who was in charge of the stadium lights, encountered difficulties operating the equipment using his laptop. The lack of a backup laptop exacerbated the situation, as the London stadium operates under a strict curfew. If the concert exceeded the designated time limit, Burna Boy would have been required to halt his performance, and his promoter would have been obliged to pay a fine of £150,000 for every additional 30 minutes that they exceeded the deadline. A Nigerian man named Nnamdi, who was attending a course on International Sports Law, shared a video in which the chief security officer explained the incident. Nnamdi commended Burna Boy for his insistence on perfection rather than compromising with a substandard stage setup. In the video, the security official emphasized Burna Boy’s meticulousness and how he refused to go on stage until the stadium backdrops were functioning correctly. He wrote; “Burna such a perfectionist. Valencia has been fined €45,000 and will have to close the stand where Vinicius Jr was racially abused for five games following a ruling by the Spanish FA (RFEF) This is coming after the Spanish police announced that they’ve detained three people in connection with the abuse directed at the Brazilian at Mestalla Stadium on Sunday, May 21. Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, has said that the renovation of the National Stadium, Lagos would require 21 billion naira to complete.

He revealed this via his Twitter page while he giving an update on the work which is currently on going at the venue. “The National Stadium Surulere, Lagos: Just the Facts. Not Fallacies. Upon assumption of office in 2019, I met the National Stadium in a completely run down state. Left to rot for almost 17 plus years. No renovations (or) upgrades. Illegal occupants had taken over. The Illegal occupants had distorted the original plan. We immediately set down to work at the ministry. First,the task force removed all illegal occupants and locked out miscreants. Next we sought funding from private partners as budget allocation was insufficient.

Old, damaged and clogged up water drainage system gutted out and new ones installed. Second phase of the tartan tracks installed; awaiting the final phase, followed by lanes marking. One digital score board as originally fitted into stadium has been fully installed.” Mr Dare shared some photos which captured the current state of the stadium and what it had been prior to his project.

“This is what we met and we started work on the main bowl. Our target was to fix three of the 15 critical aspects of the Surulere stadium. The pitch, scoreboard and tartan tracks. We faced delays but we never stopped. 80 per cent of these three works have been completed.

What is needed to fix the National Stadium Surulere after 17 plus years of neglect is in excess of 21 billion naira, about 45 million dollars, of which we have just about 500m naira from private and government funding. There is a limit to what can be fixed.”

Lazio slammed with partial stadium ban for racist chants at Samuel Umtiti and Lameck Banda

Barely 48 hours after Samuel Umtiti left the pitch in tears following the racist chants he and Lameck Banda were subjected to by Lazio fans during a match against Leece, the Italian club has been handed a partial stadium ban.

Umtiti left the pitch in tears after Lecce came from behind to pick up an impressive 2-1 win over Lazio.
Lecce’s win was however overshadowed by appalling racism from the away end, who targeted Umtiti and Zambia international striker Lameck Banda. With the home supporters rallying to chant Umtiti’s name, the center-back left the pitch in tears.
Lecce did their best to support Umtiti, who joined the club on loan from Barcelona in the summer following a tough period in his career after winning the 2018 World Cup with France. Lecce tweeted: “Racist chants have been overwhelmed by songs of encouragement! All the yellow and red Lecce fans started shouting one name: Umtiti.”

After the game, Umtiti took to Instagram, writing: “Great win #forzalecce” alongside a picture of him celebrating. He received plenty of replies, with Lyon pair Jerome Boateng and Alexandre Lacazette, Reading defender Naby Sarr and his Lecce teammate Strefezza all sending supportive messages.
The racist abuse also prompted an Instagram post from FIFA president Gianni Infantino. “Solidarity with Samuel Umtiti and Lameck Banda – let’s shout it loud and clear: NO TO RACISM!” he wrote.
Following the reactions to the racist chants, Italian authorities have now handed Lazio a partial stadium ban for their next match at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio has been hit with sanctions by the authorities on several occasions because of the discriminatory behavior of their supporters. The club based in Rome will serve their new ban on Sunday when they take on Empoli at home in Serie A.
