Eyebrows were raised when Real Madrid poached 17-year-old Vinicius Jr from Flamengo in the summer of 2017 for an eye-watering €46 million. Too young to even join Los Blanco’s at the time of his transfer due to international transfer restrictions, he arrived in the Spanish capital in 2018 with the weight of the world’s heavy expectations on his shoulders. Cristiano Ronaldo had just left for Turin, leaving a void on the left flank, and it was anticipated that Vinicius would replace him. Four years later, it would appear that those expectations have been fulfilled. Of course, Vinicius is still far from matching the heights that Ronaldo achieved with the club but it is tough not to see shades of his predecessor rooted in his playstyle. Hypnotizing trickery, cold-bloodedness in front of goal, and a visible clutch gene are qualities that the two share, and it is difficult not to get impassioned just considering the potential that the young man possesses.  It hasn’t always been straightforward for Vinicius. His talent was clear, but just eight league goals in his first three campaigns in Madrid led to some having their doubts, including his teammates. A testament to his robust and shrewd character, Vinicius was able to bury the hatchet and used it as motivation to progress. In the 2021/22 campaign, there hasn’t been a deadlier duo in world football than the young Brazilian and the French virtuoso, as they combined for over an immense 100 goals and assists between them. This year, the Brazilian has gone from strength to strength. His rise has been meteoric. He started the season with a point to prove and hasn’t looked back since. A newly discovered cut-throat edge to his game has accompanied his celebrated, mazy runs and mesmerizing dribbling. The Brazilian winger racked up 17 La Liga goals and 10 assists and bamboozled fans and opposition defences alike with flicks, chops and nutmegs. He ranks in the 99th percentile for progressive carries and touches in the attacking penalty box over the last year. Only 21 years old with the world at his fingertips, Vinicius Junior is undoubtedly one of the most enthralling entertainers in football. He has helped aficionados of this distinguished club quickly forget about the Kylian Mbappe saga and he is embracing his newly entrusted responsibilities like a player that has the hallmarks of a true footballing great. He simply is the ‘Real’ deal. In the footage the referee was shown before making the red card decision, a clip of Duro grabbing Real Madrid player around the neck with his arm was omitted. Xavi who initially offered his support to Vinicius over the racial abuse he suffered, said last night that the red card decision should have stood after the altercation with Hugo Duro. He said; “I don’t know if overturning Vinicius Junior’s red card is fair. My thoughts are that racism should be condemned. There was aggression there so I am surprised that they rescinded the red card.” Xavi had previously said the game should have been stopped after the abuse. He who spoke at a press conference days ago said; “Yes, matches should be stopped. It is the only profession in which insults are accepted. I don’t see any baker or teacher being insulted at work. All this has to be stopped. Try insulting a building worker. I’m sure a brick will fall on your head. “It doesn’t matter what shirt you wear. Vinicius is a person before he is a footballer. We have to defend the football professional. I don’t understand as a person, as a citizen, that you have to put up with insults. You don’t have to go to a football stadium to insult. If I go to the theatre and I don’t like the play, I leave, but I don’t insult. “We have to condemn that and educate people. We are in an environment where we are insulted and called names. It is very difficult not to bounce back. We don’t have an educated environment in the world of football.”

The VAR official on the day of the incident, Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva, has also been stood down for the time being. The RFEF has also launched a campaign under the slogan ‘Racists, out of football’, which aims to eradicate racist and xenophobic attitudes from football by raising awareness among fans that discriminatory insults or attitudes will not be tolerated.

Vinicius, who has been racially abused from the stands several times this season, was clearly incensed, prompting teammates and opposition players to try to calm him down. The Brazilian was later sent off for violent conduct in added time of his side’s 1-0 defeat following an altercation with Valencia striker Hugo Duro, the first red card of his career. Shortly after the match was concluded, Vinicius referenced the previous instances of racist abuse and accused La Liga authorities of not doing enough. He wrote on Instagram;

“It wasn’t the first time, not the second and not the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition thinks it’s normal, so does the Federation and the opponents encourage it. I am so sorry. “The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano (Ronaldo) and (Lionel) Messi, today belongs to the racists. A beautiful nation, which welcomed me and I love, but which accepted to export the image to the world from a racist country. “Sorry for the Spaniards who do not agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists. And unfortunately with everything that happens on a weekly basis, I have no way to defend. I agree. But I’m strong and will go to the end against the racists. Even though it’s far from here.” La Liga president Javier Tebas responded to Vinicius Jr’s comments by asking him not to be manipulated to insult La Liga. Tebas wrote; “Since those who should not explain to you what it is and what it can do @LaLiga in cases of racism, we have tried to explain it to you, but you have not shown up for either of the two agreed dates that you requested yourself. Before criticizing and insulting @LaLiga, it is necessary that you inform yourself properly @Vinijr. Do not let yourself be manipulated and make sure you fully understand each other’s competencies and the work we have been doing together.” Reacting to this, Vinicius accused Tebas of attacking him instead of criticizing racism. He wrote; “Once again, instead of criticizing racists, the president of LaLiga appears on social media to attack me. As much as you talk and pretend not to read, the image of your championship is shaken. See the responses to your posts and have a surprise… Omitting yourself only makes you equal to racists. I’m not your friend to talk about racism. I want actions and punishments. Hashtag doesn’t move me.”

Real Madrid star, Vinicius Junior was shown his first La Liga red card for slapping Valencia star, Hugo Duro during a match last night. It began with Vinicius on the ball, dribbling down Real Madrid’s left side, when a second ball was thrown onto the pitch from the crowd. Valencia defender Eray Comert went to kick that ball off, and whether intentionally or not did so straight at Vinicius, striking the other ball at the forward’s feet. The result was a yellow card for Comert and a free kick for Madrid, but it didn’t end there. Vinicius was also subjected to 10 fouls during an ill-tempered contest in the Balearic Islands. He is also the most-fouled player in Europe’s top five leagues by a considerable margin this season. While Mallorca has decided not to deliver an official statement on the actions of certain sections of their support, the club’s coach Javier Aguirre who spoke during a radio interview, denied that his players had targeted Vinicius during the match. Vinicius has been subjected to racial abuse by fans on at least three occasions; at the Camp Nou against Barcelona in November 2021, at Atlético Madrid in September 2022, and at Valladolid in late December 2022. Vinicius Jr racially abused by Mallorca fans during match against Real Madrid Spanish police are also investigating a possible hate crime against him after a mannequin wearing his No 20 shirt was hung from a bridge in front of the club’s training centre before the Madrid derby two weeks ago. Prosecutors in Madrid decided not to press charges over racist chanting aimed at Vinícius in September after finding it had “lasted a few seconds” and had not constituted a crime. In December Vinicius accused La Liga of continuing to do nothing about racist fans at matches, after videos on social media showed some shouting abuse and throwing objects at him the previous day at Valladolid. La Liga responded by issuing a statement condemning all forms of hate speech and saying it was following up on instances of racism at the match. Its president, Javier Tebas, said Vinicius’ accusations were “unfair and untrue”.
