Lagos honours student with highest UTME result in the state

Dejo Segbenu, a science student at Lanre Awolokun High School in Gbagada, has been honoured by the Lagos State Government for his exceptional performance in the recently concluded 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The Lagos State Education District II, located in Maryland, recognized Segbenu, who serves as the school’s Assistant Head Boy, for achieving a remarkable score of 352 out of 400, surpassing his peers in the state.

Mrs. Anike Adekanye, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District II, visited the school to convey her congratulations and highlighted that Segbenu’s celebration symbolizes the positive outcomes resulting from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu‘s dedicated efforts and investments in the education sector. “The candidate with the UTME best result is being celebrated to encourage others to improve on their efforts. I must, however, commend the teachers and the entire Education District II family for their dedication to service,” Adekanye said. She added, “My joy knows no bounds, especially with the success and achievement of the district, as recorded so far. The district is known for good results and achievements such as winning the Best Teacher Award in the state, the Best Artisan Award, the Best Student Award, including the best WASSCE result, and winning the Spelling Bee Competition with the prize of becoming the One-Day Governor, among others.” Mr. Bayo Onifade, the Principal of Lanre Awolokun High School in Gbagada, expressed his gratitude to the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District II for her visit. He praised both Segbenu and his teachers for their dedication and hard work, and encouraged other students to follow Segbenu’s example and strive for academic excellence. In his own statement, Segbenu attributed his outstanding achievement to his unwavering commitment to hard work and diligent studying.

The candidature of Abia Governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti and all the candidates of the Labour Party in Abia and Kano States has been nullified by a federal high court sitting in Kano. Justice M N Yunusa who presided over the lawsuit filed by Mr Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim against the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ruled that their emergence was not in compliance with the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act.

Lagos State takes delivery of electric buses, first in Nigeria

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that the Lagos government has received the first batch of electric buses for public transportation, making it the first state in Nigeria to do so. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the advantages of electric buses, such as their ability to decrease carbon emissions and increase efficiency, and stated that the people of Lagos can now benefit from cost-efficient transportation.

The governor attributed the success of the initiative to the state government’s collaboration with Oando Clean Energy Limited. With an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, there is no need to fear that the buses can stop while in transit”

Fire engulfs Queens college, Lagos State

On Sunday, a fire broke out at Queens College in Yaba, as reported by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

The Director of the service, Margaret Adeseye, stated that the incident occurred in a two-room quarter situated behind the school staff quarters. Nevertheless, Adeseye affirmed that there were no casualties, and the fire was swiftly extinguished by the state fire service. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Furthermore, the Lagos State Fire Service and Federal Fire Service collaborated to put out the fire. Additionally, the police prevented hoodlums from forcefully accessing the school premises, and no fatalities were recorded.

Lagos State government places Chrisland school on probation for monitoring

The Lagos State Government has put Chrisland High School, Ikeja, under probation as they undergo a strict monitoring for one academic session.

Folasade Adefisayo, the State Commissioner for Education has given an update after he had a meeting with the management of Chrisland Schools and government agencies under the Lagos State Joint Task Force in charge of the implementation of the child protection and safeguarding policy. The management of Chrisland School have been given a direction by the Lagos State Ministry of Education to urgently implement short and long-term reforms in school governance and also to recruit a certified Risk Manager to conduct and render a detailed analysis of risk management to all students, all staff, stake holders and affected families over the death of the Miss Adeniran. “The stipulated conditions are outcomes of official investigations and reviews by all the agencies that form the Task Force and an example of the usual conditions precedent to reopening schools closed for any form of infraction in Lagos State”,Adefisayo said.

Senator Orji Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State, shares the sad news of the death of his first wife, Mrs. Ifeoma Kalu, at the age of 61.

On his official social media page, the former governor and Chief Whip of the Senate posted a message expressing his grief and describing Ifeoma as a woman of integrity who devoted herself to serving God and humanity. During this challenging period, Orji Kalu appealed to the public to keep Mrs. Ifeoma and her family in their prayers. “With a heavy heart and pain, we announce the passing on to the eternal glory of Mrs Ifeoma Ada Kalu aged 61. “She was a woman of virtue who was committed to the service of God and humanity. The Ogun state Police command has finally disclosed the reason for issuing an arrest warrant for controversial singer, Portable. According to the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the singer had been invited to the police station on five separate occasions, but he refused to comply with the invitation.

Portable was summoned for questioning after a report was filed against him, and the police had also sent an invitation to him through his father twice, but he still did not show up. “We have also sent an invitation to him through his father like two times, yet he did not show his face,” he said. Following his continuous refusal to honour the invitation, the police obtained an arrest warrant for Portable from a court of law. “When the officers got to the place to carry out the arrest, Portable, on sighting them, stripped himself [email protected] to create a scene. He isn’t above the law,” the police spokesperson added. Recall, on March 28, Portable had taken to Instagram Live to accuse some police officers of harassing him in his office.
