London-based club, Tottenham have signed Israel international Manor Solomon on a five-year deal after a successful loan spell at Fulham. The regulation change allowed foreign nationals employed in either country to unilaterally suspend their contracts if they wished to leave the region. FIFA recently announced that Annex 7 would be extended through to the summer of 2024, allowing Solomon, who still had five months left to run on his Shakhtar contract, to move to a new club. Solomon spent his early years at local side Maccabi Petah Tikva, where he made his professional debut as a 17-year-old in November 2016. He scored eight goals in 73 appearances for the Israeli outfit, earning himself a move to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2019. Primarily operating as an inverted left-winger, Solomon made 106 appearances for Shakhtar, scoring 22 goals and winning the domestic league title on two occasions, along with Ukrainian Cup and Ukrainian Super Cup wins. Solomon gained experience in the UEFA Champions League whilst at Shakhtar, scoring his first goal in a group-stage game against Atalanta in October 2019, a strike that made him the youngest Israeli to score in the competition. The winger also scored the decisive third as Shakhtar recorded a famous 3-2 victory away to Real Madrid in October 2020. Ahead of the 2022-23 Premier League season, Solomon joined newly-promoted Fulham on loan and scored his first goal for the west London side in a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in February.
Antonio Conte aims thinly-veiled dig at Tottenham after exit
Italian tactician, Antonio Conte appeared to have aimed a subtle dig at Tottenham owner Daniel Levy, after being forced to part ways with the club before last season was wrapped up. Conte parted ways with the Lilywhites in March after a fiery rant about the club proved to be the final straw. Antonio Conte at a Tottenham match. Source: Getty Spurs blew a 3-1 lead against Southampton after James Ward-Prowse netted a penalty in the dying embers of the tie. Conte called his players ‘unacceptable’ and ‘selfish’, claiming that there is a rotten culture and that the club needs to ‘change this situation’ imminently. Conte concluded the press conference at the time by suggesting that Levy should take some blame for Tottenham’s misfortunes, highlighting the sheer number of managers who’ve enjoyed little to no success. He eventually parted ways with the club. Since parting ways with Tottenham in March, Antonio Conte has remained coy on his time in north London. However, speaking at an awards ceremony in Arezzo on Tuesday, June 13, he claimed that “some had decided to settle for less”, a comment that has been interpreted as a thinly-veiled dig at Tottenham. Conte also said that he hasn’t lost his “passion”. Antonio Conte giving out match advice to Richarlison. Source: Getty He said; “The last experience, like all of them really, had some things that were positive and some less so. The experience was wonderful, we did the maximum possible and gave all that we had. When I arrived, the team was in eighth or ninth place, yet we qualified for the Champions League. Then this season, with the side in fourth position, I decided we should part ways with Tottenham. Some had decided to settle for less. “I still have the desire to coach, that passion never goes. If it did, I would have to look inside myself and think that it was no longer right to continue doing this profession. Having said that, I am also not spasmodically searching for a new job. If something important and serious came along, that gave me motivation, then I would give it consideration, in Italy or abroad.” Since his departure from Tottenham who recently appointed Ange Postecoglou in his stead, Conte has been heavily linked with a number of jobs throughout Europe including a return to Juventus or a move to Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Tottenham close to reaching a deal with David Raya
Tottenham are close to agreeing personal terms with Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, who is also on Manchester United’s radar. The London club entered the market for an elite goalkeeper after Hugo Lloris who had an awful season, made clear his intentions to leave the club. Brentford goalkeeper, David Raya celebrating a goal. Brentford is asking for £40 million for the 27-year-old goalkeeper. Spurs unsurprisingly don’t agree with Brentford’s valuation and will try to negotiate a lower price. It remains to be seen if an agreement between Tottenham and Brentford will be reached. Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring the situation. Tottenham goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. He tweeted; “Tottenham are now on the verge of reaching an agreement with David Raya on personal terms. Long term contract, almost agreed after positive talks. #THFC. Lloris who recently declared his desire to leave Tottenham after 11 years at the club told French newspaper Nice-Matin last week: “We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible. “But I don’t forget that I still have a year of contract with Tottenham and that in football it is always difficult to predict what will happen. What is essential at the moment is to recover well from my injury. I’m on vacation but I continue to talk and do my training. My goal is to be on top in July, then we’ll see what the future holds.”
Tottenham close to appointing Ange Postecoglou as new manager
Premier League club, Tottenham is reportedly close to confirming Ange Postecoglou as its next manager. The Athletic reported that the former Australian national team boss has, in recent weeks, been earmarked as the likely successor to Antonio Conte. A deal for the 57-year-old is now expected to be finalized in the coming days. Postecoglou celebrating a win with Celtic. Postecoglou brought the Scottish Premiership title back to Celtic Park in his first season, and his team successfully defended their crown in 2022-23 while also scooping the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup to complete a treble. However, Postecoglou refused to commit his future to Celtic following the club’s latest trophy. He told reporters after their last title win; “I anticipate enjoying this moment for the next 24-48 hours, as long as I can, before someone drags me away and takes my attention away from enjoying something that’s been hard-earned.” Late last week, popular journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Tottenham was scheduled to discuss the role with Postecoglou after the Scottish Cup on Monday or Tuesday. Romano tweeted an update on Sunday afternoon, confirming the Athletic’s earlier report. Despite Tottenham being in a state of confusion, even disarray, the open role will appeal greatly to Postecoglou, who hasn’t yet managed in Europe’s top five leagues. Postecoglou has earned huge admirers in the game for his expansive and entertaining work at Celtic. The Australian is commonly seen as one of the most exciting managers in world football. Tottenham on the other hand, endured a miserable campaign during the 2022/23 season, despite remaining unbeaten in nine of their opening 11 Premier League matches. The Lilywhites’ form fell off a cliff either side of the World Cup in Qatar, which resulted in Conte heading for the exit. The Italian’s interim replacement Cristian Stellini lasted less than a month before ex-midfielder Ryan Mason steered the ship for the final month of the campaign. Postecoglou at a Celtic match. Source: Getty But Mason was unable to turn the team’s form around and Spurs ultimately ended up missing out on securing any form of European football next season as they finished eighth in the Premier League table. In taking on the Spurs job, Postecoglou would become the fourth permanent manager employed by Daniel Levy since the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in late-2018. Tottenham has been unable to get their hands on any silverware since they lifted the League Cup under Juande Ramos in 2008. Mauricio Pochettino did lead the club to the Champions League final in 2019, where they were ultimately beaten by Liverpool. And they also reached the Carabao Cup final in 2021. But the team lost to Manchester City on that occasion and haven’t realistically been in contention for any major trophies over the last two years.
Tottenham sack interim manager Cristian Stellini
Cristian Stellini has been sacked by Tottenham after a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday, April 23. Stellini took over on an interim basis on March 26 after Antonio Conte was sacked. In a statement confirming his sack, Tottenham stated that Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable and was devastating to see. A statement from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy read; “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the Board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine. “Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.”
Lloris asks Tottenham teammates to apologize to fans after 6-1 defeat to Newcastle
Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has asked his teammates to apologize to their supporters after suffering a 6-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday, April 23. Lloris was unable to prevent Newcastle from running riot with the ball picked out of his net on a handful of occasions before halftime. Jacob Murphy opened the scoring inside 61 seconds and fired in a 25-yard stunner eight minutes later after Joelinton had doubled the Magpies’ advantage. In-form Swedish striker Alexander Isak then got in on the act, bagging a brace in the space of two minutes as disgruntled Spurs supporters began to head for the exits. After conceding five times in the opening 21 minutes of a humbling outing against Newcastle, Lloris had to be hauled off at halftime. Harry Kane did pull one back for the visitors early in the second half, taking him to 207 Premier League goals and one behind Wayne Rooney on the all-time list, but Callum Wilson scored within 65 seconds of being introduced off the bench just past the hour mark as Newcastle ensured that they hit fellow Champions League hopefuls for six. After the game, Lloris candidly spoke out and could not hide his disappointment at the result and performance. He told Sky Sports; “It’s very embarrassing. We should apologise to the fans. We didn’t show a good face and we could not match the performance of the Newcastle players. We were late in all aspects of the game and we completely missed the first part of the game. The second half is a different story but it’s really painful. “It is not even about tactics, we just could not fight and we were late. I think Newcastle just had a great performance, they were very aggressive and offensive everywhere they had the ball. It is difficult right now to assess the performances but there was a lack of pride. You can get punched once or twice, but it was like we could not even react or bounce back. Newcastle deserve a lot of credit for starting the game at 100 miles per hour. They knew exactly what to do. “We can try to find excuses and analyse the performances but the first thing is we miss the fight. In football if you go on the pitch without the desire to show aggressiveness makes things very hard. “It was a bit of a mess on the field. We cannot hide ourselves behind the club’s problems, we are professionals but today there was too much lacked. There was a differences in level between Newcastle and Tottenham. We have two very difficult games to bounce back with in midweek.” Tottenham who are guaranteed to end another season empty-handed and behind arch-rivals Arsenal, have more testing encounters fast approaching as their next two Premier League fixtures will see them take on Manchester United and Liverpool.
Tottenham Director of Football steps back from role after worldwide football ban
Fabio Paratici, the Director of Football at Tottenham has stepped back from the role weeks after being handed a football ban by the Italian FA (FIGC) over alleged financial irregularities during his time at Juventus. The ban handed over to Paratici by the Italian FA over his involvement in Juventus’ recent corruption scandal was made global on Wednesday, March 29. The Athletic‘s David Ornstein reported that Paratici met with Spurs players on Friday, March 31, to inform them of the situation, before a joint decision was made with the club for him to step back from his duties from April 19, the date of the outcome of his appeal. Tottenham has now confirmed that they’ve parted ways with the Italian football executive. A statement on Tottenham’s website read; “This week – 29 March 2023 – the FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced a decision to extend the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) sanctions, relating to Fabio Paratici, worldwide. This decision was taken in advance of Fabio Paratici’s Appeal hearing against the FIGC sanctions on 19 April 2023, the result of which would then have been considered by additional stakeholders, including the Club. “Given FIFA’s unexpected ruling, the sanctions may now have multi-jurisdictional effect, although they are still related to the FIGC Appeal. In view of FIFA’s decision, Fabio has agreed with the Club that he will take an immediate leave of absence pending the outcome of his Appeal.” The ex-director of football is just one of 11 former Juve executives to be hit with a ban, while the club themselves were handed a 15-point deduction for the current Serie A season. This is coming at a time Tottenham is looking for a successor for Antonio Conte who was recently dismissed as the club’s manager.
Tottenham and Antonio Conte part ways after viral rant
Tottenham has parted ways with Antonio Conte after the Italian slammed his players as “selfish” after their 3-3 draw with Southampton. The Italian tactician, who was appointed as Spurs boss in November 2021 had also gone off on a rant at Tottenham’s owner, Daniel Levy, and the club’s trophy record. Speaking after a 3-3 Premier League draw with Southampton on March 18, Conte said; “I think it’s better to go into the problem, we are not a team. We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart [into it]. This season compared to last, now we are worse in this aspect. When you are not a team you cannot improve. “It is easy in this way [playing without pressure or importance]. Tottenham’s story is this, 20 years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here.” Confirming that they’ve parted ways with Conte, Tottenham said in a statement; “We can announce that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left the Club by mutual agreement. We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the Club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future. “Cristian Stellini will take the team as Acting Head Coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as Assistant Head Coach. “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters.” In Conte’s first year with the club, Tottenham qualified for the Champions League in 2021-22 but was beaten by AC Milan in the round of 16 earlier this month. The club was also eliminated from the FA Cup after a loss to second-tier Sheffield United on March.
Guardiola blames Manchester City’s defeat to Tottenham on ‘exhausting trip to London’
Pep Guardiola has offered an “unusual excuse” on why Manchester City suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur during a Premier League match on Sunday, February 5. Harry Kane’s 15th-minute goal which made him the top scorer for Tottenham, was enough to seal their defeat over Manchester City. Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Guardiola suggested that his players had been affected by the trip to north London. He said; “We are an attractive team. Our teams are always good, we try to go forward and be generous for our fans. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but I cannot complain much. When you win four Premier Leagues in five years we cannot complain much about what we have done and the way we have done it. “We try to continue to do it and improve the things that will help us in the future. But we go back to Manchester. Coming to London is like going to, I don’t know, northern Europe. It is 4 hours 20 minutes, 4 hours and a half to get to a hotel. It’s so exhausting to come to London, I’m sorry. We need to come back to Manchester and prepare for the game against Aston Villa.”
