"They said my behavior was abnormal and un-Nigerian" – Man recalls how he was arrested at bank for 'calmly waiting' while others were rushing

A man has related how he was reportedly arrested at a bank because he exercised patience and calmly waited his turn while other customers were rushing to get their money.

Man arrested bank waiting abnormal un-Nigerian behavior

The story was shared by a Nigerian man identified as Najeeb Bello Oyarese on Twitter while responding to a tweet which asked people to share their arrest story. According to the Oyarese, he was at the bank in Benin patiently waiting in line for two hours at a bank on a Friday while others were scrambling to collect their cash. He claimed that some officers of DSS extraction had arrested him because they had found his behavior ‘very abnormal and unNigerian’.

The backstory, as told by the narrator which led up to his arrest, was that the DSS had supposedly been monitoring two men to tender a check at the counter so they can arrest them in the act. They had however noticed that the narrator had been in the bank for over two hours and had not been showing eagerness to take his own money, which led them to suspect and apprehend him. Read his full narration below: “Benin was the craziest because DSS arrested me in GTBank, Sapele Road because I entered the bank on a Friday and calmly waited for hours while others were rushing to get their money. They said my behaviour was very abnormal and unNigerian. 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ By the way, this is the worst day of my life and I plan to make a movie about it. It started with me taking a bus from UNIBEN to Ring Road on a rainy day, and the bus parked up inside a big pool of mud at Uselu. Passengers had to come out in the rain and wade through the mud. The day ended with me finally arriving back in Ekosodin and my neighbours came out of the hostel begging me that they had messed up big time. What happened? They took my keys to watch movies in my room, tried to keep the key back on top of my window, but it fell into the room. Anyway, middle of the story….when they brought those 2 criminals out, they used one handcuff to cuff them together, but immediately I got out of the bank, they used a brand new pair of silver handcuffs to cuff my hands together, as per mastermind. It had to be a nightmare! The worst part was the way bank staff I had known for years reacted: “Ah! Sadiq’s brother is among them? You can never really trust people O!” 🙆🏾🙆🏾‍♀️🙆🏾‍♂️ Only one came out to ask if he could call my brother. I said no. Asked him to reach into my wallet, ‘call General Zibiri’! General Zibiri talked to the DSS team lead, and all I heard was “I’m sorry sir, Yes sir, I’m sorry sir, Yes sir”. After the call he told his men, “Let him go!”. They uncuffed me, and I walked up to him. Asked ‘Is that all?’. He apologized, and that was when I asked him why… He said he was observing the 2 criminals waiting for them to tender the cheque again so he could arrest, then he noticed me having entered the bank for more than 2 hours, I seemed unbothered about getting my money. I wasn’t rushing, wasn’t stressing. Very unNigerian and abnormal.”

So, I said ‘okay I have always wanted to go on this show [Big Brother Naija], and I’m tired of this [banking] job.’ So, it was either I start processing my japa [Visa] to Canada or I can go for [BBNaija]. And then it was more like you can go for this thing [BBNaija] and then come back and process your Canada [Visa] and whatever life brings. “I was just really tired of where I was. So, I was like okay let me take a chance on this [BBNaija]. So, we went for Big Brother and then I didn’t really think after Big Brother this is what I want to do, that is what I want to do. I was just like okay, in case anything should come up, I got like management, someone I respected and trusted. And I was like ‘please o, whatever it’s I’m doing there [Big Brother house], plz make sure there’s value to be gotten when I get out’.” How Fans Sent Me N800K after Losing on Show – Tobi Bakre “Because I didn’t win, a lot of fans, people have sent money to my account. Sorry guys, I’m just confessing for the first time. I entered the bank with like nothing. I remember myself and one of my friends, Adamu, that December because life was tough, we were like ‘let’s just spend all our money and enjoy ourselves’. And this is what we did. We were clubbing, we were partying, we spent all the money. So there was really no money in January. I just got out [of Big Brother house] and I saw like N800 and something thousand in my account. So I [used it] got an iPhone. But then, I was ready to do the work. I think the rest is history,”

How I dealt with vendor who charges double on bank transfer — Lady

Naira scarcity

Young lady narrates how she dealt with a plantain vendor who tried to exploit the naira scarcity by charging double on bank transfers.

Naira scarcity

A Facebook user identified as Amy George narrated how a plantain vendor in her area tried to exploit the Naira scarcity. The seller reportedly insisted on charging N2K for the price of N1K plantain from customers who can’t afford new naira notes. In a lengthy note, Amy wrote in part; “There’s a lady around the street we buy plantain from. She sells 4 for 500naira. My girl went to her shop last week to buy plantain, she refused accepting transfer and was insisting on new currency. My girl said she chatted with her and they joked around the whole no cash payment. The lady told her the only thing she accepts is payment with her pos and it comes with 1000naira charges.
That is; If you buy 1k plantain, you will pay 2k through her pos. Or maybe 1,500 with plenty ‘abeg’
I told my girl to enter market mbok, find other sellers that would accept transfer and buy things. We got a bunch of plantain for 3,500 at the market. This morning as I was leaving, I saw bunches of overripe plantain and some rotten ones at the lady’s shop. I don’t know what carried me to her shop o, I packed in front and was jokingly telling her about her new policy. Madam was showing a pity face. How market is slow because people don’t have cash to buy again … “
