Simon then saved again from Bruno Petkovic to hand Spain a second chance to win, which Dani Carvajal took with a chipped finish. Spain’s last title was the 2012 European Championship and the Nations League will help make up for a disappointing World Cup in which they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Morocco. Croatia, who were runners-up at the World Cup in 2018 and third in 2022, have never won a major trophy and were hoping Nations League success would cap a glittering international career for captain Luka Modric, who played his 166th international game. It also avenged their 2021 final defeat by France. Real Madrid defender Carvajal told Spanish broadcaster TVE; “For us it was a unique opportunity, we went out early in another tournament (at the World Cup in Qatar) and today we had to take advantage. “We had confidence with the penalties and it went well, I knew how I was going to shoot it, and I knew I was going to be sixth… I wanted to take it Panenka style and it went well.” It remains to be seen whether this was Modric’s final chance to deliver a trophy for his country, with the 37-year-old former Ballon d’Or winner set to make an announcement on his international future this week.

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Wase GistReel reports that at the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly on Tuesday, candidates of the All Progressives Congress had emerged as winners of the leadership positions in the Senate and the House of Representatives. While Godswill Akpabio defeated Abdulaziz Yari to become President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau emerged as the Deputy President of the Senate. Abbas defeated Wase in a landslide victory and won his election as Speaker, leaving them with three votes each. Benjamin Kalu emerging as Deputy Speaker. In a statement issued on Wednesday and titled ‘10th Assembly Speakership Contest: Concession and Congratulatory Message by Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase,’ the former Deputy Speaker was tactically silent on the immediate past Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who backed Abbas against him. The statement read, “I wish to extend my sincere congratulations to Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on their election as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively of the 10th House of Representatives. Although we were on different sides of the political space, we have, nevertheless, always acknowledged that we were all partners in the project of deepening our parliamentary democracy. “I believe my contest in this speakership election was much more about making a case for what I considered a lack of equity and fairness in the manner in which my party’s zoning was done much more than it was about winning. “As a politician who has been engaging in elections since 2007 and has returned to the House for the 5th term, I verily understand that every contest must generate its necessary contentions. However, in the end, we have to come together to confront the bigger matters of stability of the Parliament and enriching Legislative Governance to deepen our collective democracy. Current speaker of the house of reps, Tajudeen AbbasCurrent speaker of the house of reps, Tajudeen Abbas “In this light, I wish to once again congratulate the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, on their victory and urge my supporters and well-wishers, as well as my fellow contestants, to give them all the cooperation required to achieve a stable and united 10th House of Representatives.” Wase noted that he intends to “fervently and actively” participate in all legislative business of the 10th Assembly and would continue to proudly represent not only Wase Federal Constituency in Plateau State but Nigerians at large. “I thank my mentor and leader, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, for his continuous fatherly support and counsel, which he has sustained from my early days in ACN till date. I am immensely indebted to you sir and will continue to be. “I thank my constituents who have consistently demonstrated their unalloyed faith in and support for me by continuously returning me to the Green Chambers now for the 5th term to represent them. I will continue to represent you well. I thank my campaign team and supporters for their ceaseless efforts throughout the campaign. I am very much indebted to you. “I thank all my honourable colleagues for their support and counsel. I thank those who voted for me. I thank those who did not vote for me. I thank those who voted my opponent even when their heart was with me. I am eternally grateful to you all and must say that I have been further enriched by the experience. I assure all my colleagues that I will continue to, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, show ‘Charity towards all and malice towards none.’”

“Those who can’t accept defeat do not deserve victory”

president bola ahmed tinubu

On Monday, June 12, President Bola Tinubu delivered a speech commemorating the 30th anniversary of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Regarding the 2023 election, Tinubu expressed the view that individuals who are unable to tolerate and accept defeat in elections are unworthy of experiencing the joy of victory when their turn comes. June 12 Speech from President Tinubu “We have traversed the dark, thorny path of dictatorship before and those who experienced it can readily testify to the unbridgeable gap between the dignity of freedom and the humiliation and degradation of tyranny. “True, rancorous debates, interminable wrangling, ceaseless quarrels, bitter electoral contestations may be perceived by some as unattractive features of democracy. But they also testify to its merit and value. “This year, we held the seventh in the cycle of elections that have become sacred rituals of our democratic practice in this dispensation since 1999. “That the polls were intensely contested is in itself positive evidence that democracy is well and alive in our land. It is only natural that even as those who won and experienced victory in the various elections are elated and fulfilled, those who lost are disenchanted and disappointed. But the beauty of democracy is that those who win today can lose tomorrow and those who lose today will have an opportunity to compete and win in the next round of elections. “Those who cannot endure and accept the pain of defeat in elections do not deserve the joy of victory when it is their turn to triumph. Above all, those who disagree with the outcome of the elections are taking full advantage of the constitutional provisions to seek redress in court and that is one of the reasons why democracy is still the best form of government invented by man.”

Lloris asks Tottenham teammates to apologize to fans after 6-1 defeat to Newcastle

GistReel

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has asked his teammates to apologize to their supporters after suffering a 6-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday, April 23. Lloris asks Tottenham teammates to apologize to fans after 6-1 defeat to Newcastle Lloris was unable to prevent Newcastle from running riot with the ball picked out of his net on a handful of occasions before halftime. Jacob Murphy opened the scoring inside 61 seconds and fired in a 25-yard stunner eight minutes later after Joelinton had doubled the Magpies’ advantage. In-form Swedish striker Alexander Isak then got in on the act, bagging a brace in the space of two minutes as disgruntled Spurs supporters began to head for the exits. After conceding five times in the opening 21 minutes of a humbling outing against Newcastle, Lloris had to be hauled off at halftime. Harry Kane did pull one back for the visitors early in the second half, taking him to 207 Premier League goals and one behind Wayne Rooney on the all-time list, but Callum Wilson scored within 65 seconds of being introduced off the bench just past the hour mark as Newcastle ensured that they hit fellow Champions League hopefuls for six. Lloris asks Tottenham teammates to apologize to fans after 6-1 defeat to Newcastle After the game, Lloris candidly spoke out and could not hide his disappointment at the result and performance. He told Sky Sports; “It’s very embarrassing. We should apologise to the fans. We didn’t show a good face and we could not match the performance of the Newcastle players. We were late in all aspects of the game and we completely missed the first part of the game. The second half is a different story but it’s really painful. “It is not even about tactics, we just could not fight and we were late. I think Newcastle just had a great performance, they were very aggressive and offensive everywhere they had the ball. It is difficult right now to assess the performances but there was a lack of pride. You can get punched once or twice, but it was like we could not even react or bounce back. Newcastle deserve a lot of credit for starting the game at 100 miles per hour. They knew exactly what to do. “We can try to find excuses and analyse the performances but the first thing is we miss the fight. In football if you go on the pitch without the desire to show aggressiveness makes things very hard. Lloris asks Tottenham teammates to apologize to fans after 6-1 defeat to Newcastle “It was a bit of a mess on the field. We cannot hide ourselves behind the club’s problems, we are professionals but today there was too much lacked. There was a differences in level between Newcastle and Tottenham. We have two very difficult games to bounce back with in midweek.” Tottenham who are guaranteed to end another season empty-handed and behind arch-rivals Arsenal, have more testing encounters fast approaching as their next two Premier League fixtures will see them take on Manchester United and Liverpool.

Chelsea’s manager, Graham Potter has said that he’s taking the blame for his side’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, April 1.

I take responsibility - Graham speaks on Chelsea's defeat to Aston Villa

Ollie Watkins gave Villa the lead in the first half before captain John McGinn’s long-range effort in the second period doubled the advantage for the away side. The result has piled pressure on Potter, with Chelsea now 11th in the table.  Speaking after the match, Potter told BBC Sport:  “In both boxes we were second best. The first goal for them is disappointing from our perspective. “There were a lot of good things in the game, a lot of attacking entries and shots. If you look at the stats of the game it was a positive performance, but in terms of the scoreline it’s not. We’re all really disappointed. “The most important number is the one that goes against us. We have to do better. In terms of the game, you can see the players gave everything, they took on the responsibility, they tried, they had lots of entries into the box and shots and attacks. I take responsibility - Graham speaks on Chelsea's defeat to Aston Villa “Ultimately we conceded a poor first goal which makes everything very emotional and rightly so. We’re disappointed because we’re 1-0 down but the players responded well they kept on responding throughout. The second goal is disappointing because we started the second half well. “But if you look at the stats apart from the main one there is a lot of positives there. But at the moment into doesn’t feel too positive. “Defensively we’ve left ourselves too open but again if you look at the stats of the game we had chances ourselves, we had one-v-ones, but the most important thing, putting the ball into the net, we were second-best. “I don’t like to blame anybody, I have to take responsibility. We are a team, we have to stay together, we are together. We win or lose together.” Chelsea will be facing a crucial home game against Liverpool on Tuesday, April 4, with the Champions League quarter-final later this month potentially a make-or-break tie for Potter.
