Mourinho’s assistant banned for a month after rant at match officials

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed that AS Roma’s coach, Jose Mourinho’s assistant, Salvatore Foti has been banned from the touchline for a month. Foti was banned from the touchline for a month after losing his temper after Roma’s defeat to Cremonese in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup. He is accused of engaging in offensive rants at match officials, threatening behaviour towards the Cremonese manager, and yelling blasphemous insults after he was sent off. The FIGC further revealed that Mourinho’s 34-year-old assistant went to the referee’s dressing room after the game where he indulged in “further offensive expressions in a threatening tone”. This is not the first time that Foti has found himself in hot water. Mourinho was forced to apologize for his assistant’s actions back in April of last year after he mocked Salernitana and told a member of their staff they would soon be relegated. Foti will now miss Serie A games against Empoli, Lecce, and Verona as well as the trip to Cremonese at the end of the month.

French football star, Ousmane Dembele might be out for some time as he suffered an injury during Barcelona’s clash with Girona on Saturday, January 28. English FA launch spot-fixing investigation after Arsenal vs Oxford match

The English FA has opened a spot-fixing investigation into suspicious betting patterns during Monday’s game between Oxford United and Arsenal in the FA Cup third round. The investigation will be centered on an Oxford player who played in the match which ended 3-0 in favour of Arsenal. Daily Mail reported that the FA has a dossier of evidence regarding supposed corruption that includes phone messages before kick-off at the Kassam Stadium concerning a specific incident. One message reportedly displayed a betting slip with around £200 staked on a specific bet at odds at 8-1. It is said that one bookmaker was forced to pay out around £1,600 following the clash.

Eyewitnesses at the Kassam Stadium reportedly saw many people celebrating in the stands, with several fans bragging about having won hundreds of pounds. It is however unclear how many bets were actually placed ahead of the game but the FA is taking the matter very seriously. Reacting to the development, Oxford United said in a statement;

“Oxford United can confirm that they have been made aware of a specific allegation of irregular betting around our Emirates FA Cup game against Arsenal on Monday evening. The club will co-operate fully with any investigation and while this is ongoing, we are unable to make any further comment.” This is also not the first time that an FA Cup clash involving the Gunners has ended in controversy.

FA to investigate alleged homophobic chant during Manchester City’s match against Chelsea

The English Football Association (FA) has announced that it would investigate the alleged homophobic chants during Sunday’s match between Chelsea and Manchester City.

The homophobic chants were heard towards the end of the third-round match at Etihad Stadium, which ended 4-0 in favour of Manchester City.
Reacting to the chants, the FA said in a statement;
“We continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service, as well as the UK Football Policing Unit, in relation to the use of this term.
“Part of our work in this area has been to provide the relevant authorities with impact statements from LGBTQ+ supporters, detailing how chants of this nature affects their experience and feeling of inclusion at football matches, so that a clearer stance and understanding on the chant can be established.

“We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination and we are striving to ensure our game is a safe environment for all, which truly embraces diversity and challenges hateful conduct both on and off the pitch.”
This is not the first time homophobic chants have been heard during an FA Cup match in the past week. It was also heard during Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Everton at Old Trafford on Friday.

Klopp says he doesn’t know why Wolves’ winner in FA Cup match was disallowed

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he felt Wolves should have won the FA Cup third-round match against his team on Saturday night, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Wolves thought they had scored a late winner after defender Gomes Toti found the net with a backheel, but it was ruled out when Matheus Nunes was deemed to be offside.
There was however confusion as VAR had no camera angle available with any evidence to overturn the linesman’s decision.
Comparing the situation to a goal Liverpool conceded away at Arsenal back in October, Klopp sympathized with Wolves as he admitted he had thought it was a goal in play.
The Liverpool coach told reporters;

“I don’t really know (if it was a goal). On the pitch, I couldn’t see it so had no idea. I thought it was a goal. It was the player in the left corner. He might have been offside.

“We had a similar situation in the Arsenal game where one angle was missing. In the end everybody thought it was a clear offside but we couldn’t prove it because the angle was not there.
“I don’t know how these things can happen but it happened. So I understand the frustration of Wolves because you want to have the right decision in these moments like we wanted the right decision back then but I cannot say anything about it because I only saw one camera perspective.”
While the incident has led to more debate over the use of VAR, the two teams will be preparing to meet again in a replay at Molineux in a few days.

Four Uruguayan World Cup stars facing ’10-15 match ban’ for their actions in Qatar

Four Uruguayan players who featured in some matches played by their country at the 2022 World Cup are facing the prospect of a 10-15 match ban for club and country.

Spanish media outlet AS reported that the four players have been collared for breaching articles 11 and 12 of FIFA’s disciplinary code, and now await the decision from the governing body, with the FIFA disciplinary rulebook stating: “The prohibition of carrying out activities related to football for at least six months.”.
Reports also suggest that Giménez is accused of hitting a FIFA official, while Cavani reportedly threw the VAR monitor to the ground on the way to the changing room tunnel in the aftermath of the incident.

The serious nature of the acts connected with Giménez and Cavani in particular could lead the FIFA Committee to characterize them as inciting public “hate or violence”, meaning the duo could face up to six months on the sidelines.
36-year-old keeper Muslera has been a key figure for his country, making 133 caps, having made his name at club side Galatasaray, having joined the Turkish giants in 2011 from Lazio and been club captain since 2020.

Uruguay captain Godin, having made 161 appearances since his debut in 2005, is still key for his country despite being 36 years old. The Uruguayan legend has been a top defender in Europe for years and was influential in Atletico’s rise under Simeone in the early 2010s, but currently plays his club football with Vélez Sarsfield in the Argentinian first division.
FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s final decision will be announced at the end of February and there’s a risk that the players could be banned from playing for their clubs, as well as their countries.

Luka Modric who is featuring in his last World Cup tournament for Croatia following the match against Argentina last night has lashed out at the referee who officiated the game.

He described the performance of Italian referee, Daniele Orsato, who officiated the semi-final match which ended 3-0 in favor of the South American team as a “disaster”.
Modric admitted that Argentina was the better side but said Orsato shouldn’t have awarded the penalty which Lionel Messi converted.
