The teacher who posted the video on her Tiktok account, @june_shugar, is an NYSC corper serving at the school. In the video she posted, the entire class was writing a test and the boy was caught stylishly peeping his seatmate’s work. 500-level student shot dead, others injured as shooting breaks out in UNIBEN
In a shocking incident that transpired on Friday evening, October 27, a 500 level student at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was tragically shot and killed. The fatal incident unfolded on the UNIBEN campus, leaving two other students injured. The unfortunate chain of events is believed to have its roots in an earlier altercation that had taken place in Ekiadolor, a community near the university, culminating in the violent shooting incident on campus.
According to several online reports, the nature of the altercation and subsequent shootings is suspected to be related to a cult clash. It is alleged that the assailants involved in the incident may have affiliations with campus-based cult groups. A video that circulated on various social media platforms provided a harrowing visual account of the incident. The video showed a red car riddled with bullet holes and the lifeless body of a man being removed from the vehicle and transferred to the back of a pickup van for transport.
The shocking scene drew a horrified crowd of students who stood in disbelief and distress at the sight. At the scene of the shooting, bullet casings and bloodstains were evident. Abandoned on the ground was a man’s cap, adding to the grim evidence of the incident. In the aftermath of the violence, other students who sustained injuries during the clash shared photos of their wounds on X (formerly Twitter). Students described the scene as an excessive and violent punishment, with the vice principal even striking the student repeatedly on the head. Dr. Usman Abubakar Zaria, the Director-General of KSSQAA, has confirmed the tragic incident and expressed deep concern. The KSSQAA team visited the school, engaged with the bereaved family, and spoke to some of the victim’s schoolmates. They also visited the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria, where the principal and the vice principal were being detained. The victim’s death was formally confirmed at Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital in Zaria. As a result, in accordance with its establishment Act, the KSSQAA has ordered the immediate closure of Al-Azhar Academy. The school premises have been sealed pending the outcome of the investigation. According to the school, the sad incident involved punishment action for absenteeism meted out to a JSS III (Basic 9) student, named Marwanu Nuhu Sambo, which led to the death of the student on Friday, 20th October 2023. “The KSSQAA, Ministry of Education, representing the Kaduna State Government, was earlier today on a fact-finding visit, seeking to piece together the sequence of events that transpired: from the Al-Azhar Academy, the school where the incident happened, to engage with bereaved family as well as some school mates of the victim. The KSSQAA team then visited the Divisional Police Headquarters, Zaria City, where the principal and the vice principal were being detained. “The fact-finding team then moved to Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria, where the victim was formally confirmed dead. “In the interim, guided by the provisions of its establishment Act (amended 2015), the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority has closed down the Al-Azhar Academy, Zaria, and the school premise remains sealed, pending the outcome of the investigation,” KSSQAA stated.
