"Wetin you de take 30 cars do?" ― Charley Boy berates Ortom over impoundment of vehicles in his garage

Veteran singer and actor, Charles Oputa, aka Charly Boy, has berated the former governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom for having over 30 cars in his garage. Charley Boy expressed disappointment with the immediate past Governor over the discovery and impoundment of government vehicles in his garage by the Assets Recovery Committee of the current administration.

"Wetin you de take 30 cars do?" ― Charley Boy berates Ortom over impoundment of vehicles in his garage

Veteran singer and actor, Charley Boy Charly Boy said he used to like Ortom because of his criticisms of former president Muhammadu Buhari but not anymore. He said he wasn’t aware that Ortom was worst than Buhari. In a tweet on Thursday, Charly Boy wrote, “See as Ortom go fall my hand. “How come dem discover over 30 cars for ur garage, wetin you dey take am do.
Na only u alone wan ride 30cars, una don craze be dat. “Before I bin like U small as u dey follow us tackle Buhari, I no know say u fk up pass. “I hope all the salaries U dey owe, say u pay before u leave. “Kai, U no just try at all.” Recall that the Asset Recovery Committee set up by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, on Tuesday, raided an automobile shop owned by former Governor, Samuel Ortom, in Makurdi, the state capital. Some vehicles were seized during the operation as the committee reportedly used towing vans to pull out some vehicles after attempts to drive them away failed. The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, described the committee’s outing as “a shameful showing of naked tyranny and impunity.” “Earlier today, thugs accompanied by security agents purporting to be on an assets recovery mission, raided a private automobile workshop owned by the former governor’s business concern, Oracle Nig. Ltd., carting away motor vehicles at the premises of the workshop.” “Staff of the workshop have confirmed to PDP that the vehicles, of a yet-to-be-ascertained number, were those brought there for repairs by private owners and are not in any way from a public source. “PDP notes that this is yet another manifestation of disregard for the rule of law by the Benue State Governor, considering there is a subsisting court order barring his government from tampering with the assets of the former governor, specifically motor vehicles.”

Female auto-mechanic reveals why vehicles have short life span in Nigeria

The Managing Director, LadyBenz Auto-Mechanic Ltd., Joy Obi, on Thursday, attributed the short life span of vehicles in Nigeria to poor maintenance culture. Obi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it was important for vehicles to be properly maintained to enhance their aesthetics and guarantee optimal performance.

Vehicles in a mechanic workshop She said that lack of vehicle maintenance was one of the major causes of accidents on Nigerian roads. Obi said that, unfortunately, many vehicle owners and commercial drivers use engines without adhering to manufacturers’ maintenance instructions, adding that an average Nigerian does not pay attention to such details. According to the auto mechanic, most vehicle manufacturers specify the type of oil suitable for most engines, but to manage cost most people go for cheap oil, which could damage the engine. “Regularly performing oil change as part of your vehicle maintenance routine helps keep the engine properly lubricated, reduces friction and wears. “Routine maintenance ensures that your vehicle operates at its optimal level, minimising breakdowns and maximising reliability. “It helps prevent issues that could lead to unexpected and costly repairs, keeping you on the road with confidence. “It’s also essential to maintain components such as brakes, tyres, and suspension systems for road safety,” Obi said. She added that by addressing minor issues early on and adhering to recommended service intervals, one could extend the life of the vehicle. The auto mechanic stressed the need for vehicle owners to pay attention to the check engine light, also known as the malfunction indicator light (MIL), noting that it was one of the most common diagnosis lights found in vehicles. According to her, it illuminates when the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system detects an issue with the engine or emission control system. Obi added that it was also necessary to pay attention to small details such as the front and rear glasses, brake light, the colour of the smoke from the exhaust pipe and the plugs. She said that all these work harmoniously to ensure the efficiency of any vehicle. The auto-mechanic also urged vehicle owners and commercial drivers to do regular car tyre pressure checks. She noted that this would make the vehicle balanced, as well as make the tyres to wear off evenly. Obi stressed that incorrect tyre pressure could lead to brake failure, unstable movement of vehicles, as well as other problems that could lead to accidents. She said that most motorists are equally ignorant when it came to changing brake pads, adding that some waited till the brake was worn out before changing it. Obi urged vehicle owners and commercial drivers to imbibe the culture of regular vehicle maintenance to avoid breakdowns on highways. She also noted that considering the high rate of inflation in the country it was necessary to pay attention to vehicle maintenance to avoid spending so much money to repair it. Earlier, in a related event, the Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), Mr Kayode Ibidapo, had corroborated Obi, saying that poorly maintained vehicles are likely to consume more fuel. Ibidapo said, during a general meeting and seminar organised by the association, that it was advisable for car owners to maintain their vehicles routinely to avoid spending so much money on buying fuel. He said that this was proactive thinking for vehicle owners, considering the current price of fuel. The theme of the seminar was, “Vehicle Maintenance (Routine and Major Maintenance)’’. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Joy Obi is also a member of NATE.

Zamfara police complies with court order, returns all vehicles seized from Matawalle

Former governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle Abubakar said the vehicles were returned in compliance with the order of Federal High Court sitting in Gusau. The court, presided by Justice Aminu Bappah-Aliyu had on June 15, ordered all security agencies that removed the vehicles from Matawalle’s houses in Gusau and Maradun, to return them within 48 hours. Recall that security operatives removed the vehicles from the two houses on the order of the State government. The court gave all parties involved in the invasion of the former governor’s houses 48 hours to comply with the order. “Yes, the police command has complied with the court order as regards to returning of all vehicles belonging to the former governor, Bello Matawalle. “We have returned all the vehicles to the premises of Federal High Court, Gusau, as I speak to you now, no single vehicle is in police custody,” Abubakar said. The court also gave an order of interim injunction restraining the respondents in the suit filed by Matawalle from taking any further action in connection with the matter. The respondents include the Inspector-General of Police, Nigeria Police Force and Commissioner of Police, Zamfara. Others are the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC). The court further ordered the security agencies to stay away from all actions, pending the hearing and determination of the matter before it. Mr Suleiman Idris, spokesperson to Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, had earlier said more than 40 vehicles were recovered from the two houses of the former governor. He also confirmed that the security agencies took the action on the directive of the state government. NAN

“Ortom did nothing unlawful leaving with official vehicles” ― Aide tells Hyacinth Alia

"Ortom did nothing unlawful leaving office with official vehicles allocated to him" ― Aide

Terver Akase, an aide to the former governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has cautioned the newly elected governor of the State, Hyacinth Alia over his comment that his principal left office with all official vehicles allocated to him. Akase who countered the governor in a statement on Friday said that Ortom did nothing unlawful leaving with the vehicles and according to him, it was the decision of the state executive council to allow Ortom, his deputy and officials to go with the vehicles allocated to them. "Ortom did nothing unlawful leaving office with official vehicles allocated to him" ― Aide Former governor of Benue State, Samuel OrtomRecall that Hyacinth Alia, Benue governor who won the 2023 governorship election in the state under the All Progressives Congress, APC, had accused Ortom’s administration of looting, alleging that he “met no single car or truck in the government house”. Reacting to Hyacinth Alia’s statement, Akase said “In his latest outing, the governor has accused his predecessor of carrying out recruitment into the civil service without due process; handing to him an empty treasury and looting government vehicles, among several other unfounded accusations,” Akase said. “The present administration may wish to be informed that it was the decision of the Benue state executive council that government officials, including the governor and his deputy, be given waivers to enable them to go with the official vehicles allocated to them. “Governor Ortom, therefore, did nothing unlawful by leaving office with the official vehicles allocated to him. “It is a tradition that an outgoing governor leaves with vehicles given to him. Perhaps we should add that the Ortom administration offered to buy vehicles for the incoming government but the present governor declined, saying that he would prefer to buy vehicles for his administration after the inauguration.” On the issue of sacked appointees and workers, Akase said Ortom’s government followed due process in recruiting the workers. “While we won’t go into a war of words with the governor despite the media trial, it is pertinent to clarify that the Ortom administration followed due process in recruiting the workers whom the present government sacked a few days ago,” he said. “Vacancies were duly advertised in national newspapers and those who applied for the jobs were properly interviewed/screened and the successful ones were given appointment letters as required by civil service rules.

The present governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia “Promotions were also carried out according to the laid down service regulations. “We expected the Alia administration to specifically point out the areas where it claimed that due process was not followed in the recruitments, instead of making sweeping statements and spurious generalisations.”

Lagos Government releases impounded vehicles

GistReel

The Lagos State Government has begun the release of impounded vehicles to their owners without the payment of fines.

Sanwo-Olu

The state government said it decided to wave the fine attached to such seizures due to the cash crunch that has hit the nation following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Naira redesign policy. Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, who confirmed this on Tuesday, March 7, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had extended the palliative measures by ensuring that vehicles impounded for minor traffic offenses were returned to their owners with the fines waived.

impounded vehicles

He said; “When you look at what the governor proposed, especially during the cash crunch period, we have reduced public transport fare by 50%. So when you go on our BRTs and all the Lagos state funded public transport, including Lag Ride, we have reduced the fare by 50% just to alleviate the suffering of our people. Apart from that, moving away from transport, we have opened up food banks in certain areas. So we’re beginning to give out palliative just to ensure that people get through this cash crunch period. We’re happy that APC has won at the national level. And we are beginning to see some of these policies being reversed. So we’re hoping that in a short time, life would return back to normal but in terms of public transport, I think we’ve reduced fare by 50%. There are some people that committed offences during that period and we understand the fact that money wasn’t easy to come by. Looking at the governor’s magnanimity, the governor has deemed it fit to ensure that people who committed crimes within that period and wanted to pay or couldn’t pay as a result of the shortage of cash, they should come and pick up their cars and he has waved the fines. Mind you, that does not include major crimes committed. These are just minor traffic offences that have been committed in Lagos and this is showing empathy and trying to understand that look, we understand how difficult it has been and it is not a reason for us to stop you from making ends meet and so hence the governor’s magnanimity. All those who have committed crime within that period should come and pick up”
