Police rescue baby abandoned under parked bus in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command says it has rescued a baby abandoned under a parked bus in the Mile 12 area of the state on Thursday morning. A spokesperson for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known on his verified Twitter handle @benhundeyin.

According to reports, these sex workers were arrested at popular brothels and ghettos in Koforidua, the capital town in the Eastern Region through a special operation initiated by the Member of Parliament for the New Juaben South Constituency, Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi. The Member of Parliament together with the police staged this operations due to the rise of the activities in the constituency which has the tendency to negatively corrupt the youth and taint the reputable image of the regional capital. The police disclosed that about 90 percent sex workers arrested were Nigerians while the rest were Ghanaians and others from other foreign nationals. “Yesterday, I directed the police to do an operation in town, and so they started the first operation to arrest all those prostitutes who come to our town. We managed to arrest about 50 people, and we will arraign them before the court,” he said. “About 90 percent are Nigerians. There are Ghanaians. They are coming here to dent the good image of Koforidua. Everybody who is doing that business will not be tolerated. Some may be living in your house. If you know such persons and cannot go to the police station, call me,” “Prostitution in Koforidua will not be tolerated, and we urge you to help us to deal with the act in the town,” the MP added.

Nigerian singer and songwriter Oxlade has recounted how he sold tickets and food as a source of living after running away from home. According to Oxlade, he run away from home to pursue his music career and had to sell bus tickets—a job of motor park touts, popularly called “agbero.” During an interview, Oxlade disclosed that his father who is a lecturer at a university never supported his music career. He said: “Honestly, he [my dad] was indifferent at first. But my stubbornness and consistency paid off [laughs]. “I ran away from the house at some point in my life to pursue music personally. And I had to do all sorts of stuff to survive. A video of a bus driver confronting a policeman after he conducted a “routine” search on his vehicle is currently trending online. The aggrieved bus driver who was on his way to Umuahia, Abia state’s capital, was heard narrating what happened between them and one of the police officers who whipped out his phone to also record the scene with his colleague.

He accused the police officer of tearing a passenger’s bag during the search and refusing to pay for the damage. What the security operative muttered while the bus driver laid out his grievance was inaudible. He (bus driver) went on to say he won’t be moving out his vehicle which he blocked the road with, until the policeman pays for the damage.

FG clarifies reason bus evacuation of Nigerians cost $1.2m

The Nigerian Government gives clarification on why it cost the sum of $1.2 million for the buses that were used to evacuate Nigerians from Sudan. The government stated that the amount was negotiated under the “condition of war.” This information was provided in a joint statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.

The statement was signed by Amb. Janet Olisa, the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, MFA, and Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary, FMHADMSD. “The general public is also advised to discountenance unverified information being circulated on social media as some of them are either due to ignorance or sheer mischief. The outcry over the negotiated sum of $1.2 million for the buses hired for the exercise, is uncalled for. “The amount in question was negotiated in a condition of war and where there are competing demands for the same bus services by other countries also trying to evacuate their citizens. Therefore, cooperation and understanding of all and sundry are required to complement ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring the safe return of every Nigerian trapped in Sudan,” the statement clarified. An undisclosed transport company was paid N150 million by the Central Bank of Nigeria through the National Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday at 12:37 pm, The Punch reported. This money was released by the government to hire 40 buses to transport stranded Nigerian citizens from Sudan to Cairo, Egypt, due to the current crisis in the country.

Lincoln Bamfo, a Ghanaian resident in the United Kingdom, has revealed that he earns an annual income above £45,000 (N25.7 million) as a bus driver.

Bamfo revealed that he is a graduate of Accra Polytechnic and Accra Technical University (ATU) and was raised in Belgium before moving to London as an adult. He attributed his good fortune to the UK system that values the contributions of workers and allows him to pay for his education.

Bamfo emphasized that Ghanaian drivers receive inadequate training after obtaining their license, unlike in the UK, where he undergoes refresher courses or a week of training every five years. Watch the video below:

The Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr Fidet Okhiria, reveals what led to the accident involving a train and a BRT bus.

The accident which occurred in Ikeja area of the state claimed the lives of 6 persons and injured 79 others, according to governor Babjide Sanwo-Olu. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, Okhiria said: “According to the information I gathered at the scene of the incident, they said many cars stopped when they got to the level crossing while the Lagos State Staff Bus driver continued moving, which I don’t know why. Maybe the driver thought he could pass before the train got nearer to him. He could not pass, and then the train cr¥shed the bus. The train was coming from Ijoko to Iddo.”

Train collides with BRT bus in Lagos

A passenger train collides with a Lagos state government BRT staff bus at PWD junction in the Ikeja area of the state on Thursday morning.

The BRT, which was carrying government workers, was crossing the rail to connect with Ikeja GRA when it was hit by the train travelling from Agege. In a series of images from the accident making rounds on the internet, onlookers gathered to rescue victims of the bus-train crash. The accident has caused heavy traffic on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for motorists travelling from Oshodi around Shogunle to Ikeja-Along.

A Nigerian lady has been left heartbroken after she found out her once-rich friend is now broke and works as a bus driver. The lady identified as Ngozi on Twitter has recounted her experience meeting her friend. Ngozi’s Tweet says he used to be rich and would often given her money during their NYSC. However, she was shocked to find out that he now works as a bus driver and is broke. She wonders what could have gone wrong with him between 2019 and 2023. She also adds that he was so ashamed following their encounter.

Bus allegedly planted to cause traffic and dissuade people from turning out for rally in Lagos

Viral reports on Twitter allege that a faulty bus was planted on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos to cause traffic and supposedly discourage residents from turning out en mass for rally.

The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi is expected to make an appearance in the metropolitan area for his campaign. However, prior to the time, various Twitter users have taken to the micro blogging platform to report an incident which they have alleged to be a deliberate attempt to cause traffic. One tweep raised alarm saying; “They made it look like the bus was faulty and planted it overnight to cause traffic at 3MB to discourage people from attending the LP rally..
