The Department of State Service (DSS) confirms that Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been charged to court. This was made known in a statement released by Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson for the DSS after having him in custody for almost 30 days.

DSS charges Emefiele to court after weeks in custody

Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. This action by the DSS is in accordance with a directive from the Abuja High Court, given on Thursday, July 13, 2023. The court order instructed the DSS to either bring charges against Emefiele within a week or release him. Afunanya’s statement reads, “Sequel to an Abuja High Court Order of today, 13th July 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele has been charged to Court in compliance with the Order.” “The public may recall that the Service had, in 2022, applied for a Court Order to detain him in respect of a criminal investigation. Though he obtained a restraining Order from an FCT High Court, the Service, however, arrested him in June, 2023, on the strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.” The DSS, however, assured the Nigerian public that Emefiele‘s case will be handled with the utmost professionalism, ensuring justice and fairness. It is worth noting that, on June 9, 2023, Tinubu issued a directive instructing Emefiele to transfer the responsibilities of the central bank to the Deputy Governor of Operations, Folashodun Shonubi, who has been functioning in an acting capacity ever since. The next day, the DSS apprehended Emefiele at his residence in Lagos, where he was allegedly planning to escape the country. He has been in the custody of the secret police ever since, prompting concerns from Human Rights activists who have advocated for him to be charged in court.

AGF’s attorney, Tijjani Ghazali (SAN), urged the court not to get involved, saying that Emefiele’s arrest and incarceration by the DSS were administrative decisions made by the executive branch of government. Confusion in court as complainant breaks down in tears, pleads on behalf of defendant

In a heart-rending scene at the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, James Bassey, the complainant in a theft case, broke down in tears as he pleaded for leniency on behalf of the defendant, Puis Savoir. The drycleaner had been sentenced to one month in prison for stealing a pressing iron and N20,000. The presiding Chief Magistrate, Patrick Adekomaiya, delivered the conviction after Savoir pleaded guilty and the facts of the case were presented by the prosecutor, Ikem Uko. The incident occurred on July 6 at around 7:00 p.m. at Yeponnawa Street, Church-Gate, Lagos. According to the prosecution, Savoir was accused of stealing a pressing iron and N20,000 from James Bassey, the complainant. The act was in violation of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015. Acknowledging that Savoir was a first-time offender, Chief Magistrate Adekomaiya expressed the court’s intention to show leniency. Consequently, the defendant received a sentence of one month imprisonment, with the first seven days to be served in prison and the remaining three weeks at Morogbo Police Station. During this period, Savoir would report to the police station daily for community service. However, immediately following the sentencing, James Bassey, overwhelmed with emotion, burst into tears and implored the court to pardon the convicted drycleaner. My Lord, I don’t have a wife or children; it is this convict that always takes care of me. He used to help me do all my domestic work and massage me, but the habit of stealing my things is too much, that is why I reported him when he stole my money and pressing iron. If you sentence him to prison now, nobody will be assisting me, and this could lead to my death,” he said.

Husband drags wife to court, narrates painful experience to judge

Husband Wife Court

A husband has taken his wife to court due to the distressing treatment he endures within their home. Despite being married, he revealed that he has been subjected to significant suffering at the hands of his own wife.

In detailing her actions, he explained that his wife frequently engages in physical violence towards him, seizing any opportunity to do so. He recounted an incident where she asked him why he doesn’t plead for mercy as her father does when her mother beats him. However, he expressed that her father may possess the strength to endure such treatment, unlike himself. Furthermore, the man disclosed that his wife has, on multiple occasions, destroyed all the clothing he owns, leaving him with nothing to wear to work, forcing him to borrow clothes from his neighbor.

Additionally, he accused his wife of engaging in infidelity with one of his friends. Nigerians have responded to the man’s confession by expressing their thoughts and opinions in the comment section. See some reactions below:  @favoredsinner: “No matter how emotional your story is as a man in an abusive relationship, people will hardly help, take you serious or believe you. The game is rigged.” @iamlindagraham: “This isn’t funny. If it was the other way round they’ll be talking about domestic violence. This is the luxury of double standards we women enjoy. I said what I said. I’ve also said that we aren’t ready to talk about men facing domestic abuse in the home too. We’re still stuck on gender wars.” @Taiwo_junzi: “Nothing the pattern! No empathy cos it’s a man! See everybody’s countenance and body language in the video. People will watch the video and smile, let it go the other way you’ll be hearing “I couldn’t watch till the end.” @JimisolaCoal: “Sigh. What’s funny about the situation ? Even the judge is smiling . Kilo funny ? Someone is speaking from a place of pain and they are kikiking. This is why men barely speak up . Eiiish” @chimxy14: “If we reverse this story nobody would be laughing in that court room. That woman even has an evil look. According to the NDLEA, Kyari allegedly attempted to bribe a senior agency officer with $61,400 at a restaurant in Abuja to prevent testing a portion of the seized cocaine linked to two individuals arrested for drug trafficking. In addition to the aforementioned charges, Kyari is also being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States in connection with a fraud case involving Instagram celebrity Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi. Following his arrest on February 14, 2022, after being declared wanted by the NDLEA over alleged drug-related connections, Kyari has remained in detention. Despite his bail application being rejected by Justice Nwite of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal about the cocaine trafficking charges. It is important to note that he is still being held without bail on the primary charge of cocaine trafficking.

"Tinubu's office does not exist until court decides" – Afenifere

Pa Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has stated that he would not recognize President Bola Tinubu’s administration until the court gives a final judgement upholding Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. The Afenifere leader while making the remark explained that the election which brought Tinubu was flawed, hence he can’t be recognized as president. Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-political organization Speaking on Arise Television, Adebanjo said the presidential election was inconclusive with the ongoing presidential Election Petition Tribunal. According to Adebanjo: “Afenifere’s stance, for now, is not to comment on Tinubu’s administration because we believe that the elections are not completed yet; it’s still in progress, that is why we are in court, so commenting on someone who is there and who we don’t believe should be there until the final decision of the court will be probative and reprobative. “We are not talking about his ability, we are talking about the process of his getting there, which is flawed. How can you build something on nothing, he is enjoying a lacuna, nothing is settled until it’s finally settled, that’s our stance. “I refuse to comment on somebody that is not existing yet until the final arbiter of the court, our party may be wrong but that is our own stance. I can’t recognize him in an office that I believe doesn’t exist.”

"Ejikeme Joy will be prosecuted in court" - JAMB speaks on fake result case

In a statement released by the board on Sunday, it was revealed that Ejikeme manipulated her score in order to secure an N3 million scholarship from Innoson Motors. In a new development, JAMB has given an update on the scandal during an interview with Legit News. According to the spokesman, Ejikeme Joy might not have perpetrated the crime, however, it could be some unknown persons using the situation against her. “She’s actually a minor; that’s another challenge, but as we speak, the security agency is profiling her…What we know is that we suspect she may not have been the original initiator of this issue. Some people are somewhere doing all those things to take advantage of the situation.” According to him, Ejikeme was arrested and released on bail. He disclosed that this is not the first time such an incident has happened because some time back a student in Kaduna also fake his results even when he did not sit for the exams. “There was one in Kaduna that one didn’t even write the exam. He just came up with one slip and then put scores and said he scored 380.”
