Armaya’u Hamisu, the returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Sokoto governorship election announced the result on Sunday evening. Aliyu polled 453,661 votes to defeat his closest rival, Saidu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 404,632 votes.

INEC State Returning Officer in the state, Kayode Adebowale, said the APC candidate who is also the incumbent Governor of the state, scored 276,298 votes to emerge the winner of the keenly contested election. Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ladi Adebutu, polled 262,383 votes to come second, thus trailing the winner with 13,915 votes. Abiodun won in 12 local government areas while Mr. Adebutu won in eight local government areas. A total of 13 political parties took part in Saturday’s election held across the state.

Eno won in 29 out of the 31 local government areas in the state with a total of 350,348 votes. His closest challenger, Bassey Albert of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who won in two local government areas, polled 136,262 votes. Akanimo Udofia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came third with 127,602 votes, and he reportedly lost in all the local governments in the state including Nsit Ibom where he hails from.

As recounted by Teslim’s special adviser on media and publicity, Olaniyi, a group of masked gunmen invaded his principal’s ancestral home at Oja’gbo area in Ibadan. He stated that the incident occurred at about 8 pm in search of Folarin who had a scheduled meeting with his family members. Olaniyi said: “Oga escaped an assassination attempt on his life this evening. He had a scheduled meeting with his family members at Oja’gbo. As you are aware, he is the one representing his family at the Olubadan line as Asaju Olubadan. So, he was supposed to hold the meeting between 6:30 and 7pm but because he was on air at a radio station, he couldn’t meet up at that time. “He didn’t leave the radio station until around 8:40 pm. So, the gunmen invaded the area around 8pm thinking that he was there and started shooting sporadically and wounded many people.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections.

Initially, the elections were scheduled to hold on the 11th of March but have now been postponed to the 18th of March, 2023. The postponement is due to the inability of the commission to promptly commence reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS machines utilized during the February 25 presidential election to enable their use in the state elections. Mahmood Yakubu INEC was earlier restrained from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until the due inspection was conducted and Certified True Copies (CTC) were issued to candidates who are challenging the outcome of the presidential election. The commission had convinced the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to vary its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar permission to inspect the election materials on the premise that it had to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduction of the polls this Saturday.

Ifeanyi and nine others were declared wanted on Monday, March 6, over the murder of a monarch, Igbokwe Ewa. The traditional ruler of the Umu-Ezekoha community in Ezza North local government area was killed in his hometown last Monday, by unknown gunmen. Ebonyi police spokesperson, Onome Onovwakpoyeya said in a statement; “The Ebonyi State Police Command has declared the under-listed persons wanted in connection with the murder of his Royal Highness Eze Christopher Igboke Ewa of Umu-Ezekoha Community in Ezza North.”
