"Demolitions in Lagos is not targeted at Igbo" – Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The leading Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo refutes reports concerning building demolitions by the Lagos State Government allegedly targeted at Igbo residents in the state. This response came in the wake of public reactions to the demolition activities carried out by the state government at Alaba International Market in the Ojo Local Government Area.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Alex Ogbonnia

Spokesperson for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbonnia. Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, had previously announced that some buildings slated for demolition had been issued quit notices since 2016. However, criticisms arose, claiming that the decision was specifically targeted at Igbo individuals within the market. In response, the spokesperson for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbonnia, released a statement on Saturday stating that the organization had conducted investigations into the matter and uncovered the true facts. Ogbonnia further mentioned that Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, urged calm among the Igbo occupants of the market while calling upon the state government and the state’s Environment and Development Authority to approach the demolition exercise with prudence and a clear objective. The statement partly read, “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to several fake publications circulating on social media alleging a decision by the Lagos State Government to take actions to victimize the Igbo citizens domiciled in Lagos. Since the disturbing news broke out, we have made investigations in order to establish the true state of affairs.”

Lagos businessman bags 3 life sentences for defiling his 3 underaged daughters

Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court Lagos businessman bags 3 life sentences for defiling his 3 underaged daughters

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday sentenced a 45-year-old businessman, Emeka Orisakwe, to three life sentences for defiling his three underaged children. The minors were aged eight, eight and six. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt the three-count charge bordering on sexual assault by penetration against the defendant.

Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court

“You are wicked and a pathological liar,” she said, adding that the defendant said his wife was mentally unstable in order to deny the offence. ”This is most bizarre and unfortunate,” she added She also berated the immediate younger sister of the defendant, who testified at the first defence witness, (DW1) for tendering a medical report concerning the mental state of the defendant’s wife which did not correlate with the timing of the incident. The judge also said that DW1 evidence was unreliable as it was a pack of lies tainted by deception after she had corrupted the minds of the survivors to lie before the court. “The children were very honest but I observed the three children that came to testify and this court could see that their aunt, whom they stayed with after the incident, had been working on their brains to tell lies before this court. “The children’s subsequent denial in court after they made statements at Satellite Police Station that their father messed around their vaginas with his fingers is an afterthought and very unfortunate. “The children were taken away from the custody of their mother and the sister-in-law painted lies in their minds. “This court can not be fooled. The DW1 is a liar and a wicked sister-in-law, whose evidence is self serving to save her brother from drawing. “The medical report on the mental state of the defendant’s wife which she tendered before this court was dated Feb. 2, 2023 but the sexual incident occurred years back and in desperation, they went to cook up a medical report from Imo state that the defendant’s wife is mentally unstable. The judge of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court further said that the attempts of DW1 and the defendant were to get through the back door when they could not get through the front door as the medical reports on the survivors revealed blunt forceful penetration. “The medical reports which were carried out on the three children and admitted into evidence before this court showed bruises on the inner surface, blunt and forceful penetration of the survivor’s vaginas. “The medical examination revealed that the three children suffered various degrees of bruises from the sexual assault perpetrated by their biological father. “This corroborates the statement of the survivors at the police station and the evidence given by the second prosecution witness (PW2), an officer from a child advocacy agency that the brother of the survivors, told him that he once saw his father, fingering his sister,” the judge said She further said that the subsequent denial of the defendant was an afterthought which did not hold water. Soladoye thereby convicted the defendant of the 3-count charge and subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment on each of the counts. She, however, held that the sentencing should run concurrently. The judge also ordered that the convict should have his name registered in the sexual offences register as maintained by Lagos State. NAN reports that the state Deputy Director of Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) , Mr Olusola Soneye called seven prosecution witnesses thought several documents were tendered while the defendant and his sister testified for the defence. Soneye told the court that Orisakwe committed the offences between January and July 2021 at No.32 Ganiyat St., Monkey Village, Maza Maza, Lagos. The prosecution submitted that the mother of the children found blood stains on the private part of one of them and she told her mother that her father had touched her “bombom” “Upon further questioning, the mother called the other two children and they also confessed to her that their father had been assaulting them sexually whenever she was not at home,” he said. According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

‘Obasa’s re-election as Lagos Speaker wrong choice for indigenes’

Obasa's re-election as Lagos Speaker wrong choice for indigenes ― Former Minister

A former Minister of Communications and Trustee of Omoeko Pataki, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (Rtd), has condemned the re-election of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, an Ogun State indigene as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The former minister who had appealed ahead of time that an indigene of Lagos state be Speaker of the 10th Assembly in the state, sees the re-election as wrong footing and wrong choice for the indigenes of the state, viewing from the background that Speaker Obasa is being investigated, and yet inaugurated as the Speaker of 10th Lagos State House of Assembly. GistReel reports that Obasa was re-elected on Tuesday by his colleagues, who also elected Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the Deputy Speaker. The lawmaker was unanimously re-elected after a proclamation of the 10th Assembly of the Lagos State House of Assembly by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who was present with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and top government officials at the chamber of the House. However,  Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju’s (Rtd) reaction to Obasa’s re-election was contained in a press release by his Media Office Wednesday morning. The release particularly relayed that General Olanrewaju, a known voice in the advocacy for improved lives of his people of Lagos origin, sees the reason given for ignoring compassionate appeals to allow owners of Lagos State to enjoy their constitutional right of participating in the day-to-day affairs of their own state as unsustainable. The Retired Army General and Prince of Lagos State, while reviewing the development, subtly said: “The clearance of Mr Obasa to return as the Speaker of the 10th Lagos State House of Assembly was premised on the need for stability and continuity in the Assembly by the highest decision-making body, otherwise known as Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). READ MORE: Lagos APC Leaders Deny Knowledge of Tobun’s Speakership Aspiration “This raison d’etre is weak and unsustainable because Mr. President Bola Tinubu was a beneficiary of a zoning and rotational policy of the National Working Committee of the APC government. The return of Mr.Obasa is a deliberate policy of marginalisation of the indigenes in the State. “No matter how the occupants of the three most important political offices of the State Administration today launder their curriculum vitae, they remain, indigenes of Ogun State but residents in Lagos and incapable of claiming indigeneship of two states, because the Constitution does not allow it. “In any case, by this re-engagement, our Assembly in Lagos has become “One Man Democracy” (apology to Sonala Olumhense, a Punch Columnist). The return of Mr. Obasa is a big slap on the faces of the indigenes of the state.,” he said in a release by his Media Office.

Oluwatobi reiterated that the primary goal of the project launch was to “raise awareness about the prevalence of gender-based violence in Lagos.” In other news, a Celestial church in the Ajah area of Lagos state was set on fire by an angry mob over allegations of finding a body with missing body parts on its premises.
