Lawmaker who was once based in UK adopts motion seeking to ban Nigerians from leaving the country
The House of Representatives on Thursday rejected a motion seeking to declare the emigration of young Nigerians abroad, known as “Japa” syndrome as a national emergency. This followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Philip Agbese(APC-Benue) who was based in the United Kingdom before becoming a lawmaker in Nigeria during plenary. The House of Reps Presenting the motion, Agbese said statistics from the Nigerian Economic Summit, showed that a growing number of young Nigerians were relocating abroad. He said the recent reports by African Polling Institute indicated that 69 per cent of young people would opt to relocate if given the chance. He said there was a 40 per cent increase in the number of young Nigerians leaving the nation compared to the number captured in 2019, as the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) reported.
He said the UN DESA stated that international emigration from Nigeria in 2020 total 1.7 million, which was a substantial increase from 990,000 in 2010. He said the growing statistics of young Nigerians leaving Nigeria and securing permanent residence in the UK, the USA, and Canada portends a grave danger for the country from Economic to intellectual and Social aspects.
When the Speaker of the House, Reps Abbas subjected the motion to a vote, it was unanimously rejected by the lawmakers. NAN
Ikpeazu denies leaving debts for Abia governor, Otti, says N6b was left in govt treasury
Former Governor of Abia state, Okezie Ikpeazu has faulted the claims by his successor, Alex Otti that he left office without leaving any cash or assets behind. Ikpeazu in a statement by his media aide, Ikechukwu Iroha, made available to newsmen on Monday claimed that he left N6 billion in the government’s coffer and was not owing any commercial bank, including temporary overdrafts at the time he left office.
Present Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti Recall that Otti, after being sworn in as Labour Party (LP) governor of Abia State disclosed that his predecessor, Ikpeazu’s left a debt of N200bn. Otti added that a total of N50bn debt from unpaid salaries, pensions and gratuities was inherited by the new government in Abia State. However, reacting to the allegation, Ikpeazu added that his administration perfected $50 million World Bank facility at a 0.06 per cent interest rate with 10 years repayment moratorium for the construction of more than 500km roads, including dilapidated Port Harcourt Road, Aba. He said, “Abia State under the watch of Dr. Ikpeazu invested $5,000,000.00 in Geometric Power Company. That’s a near-cash asset. “As of Friday, June 9, 2023, the state received N24 billion through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum as part of a total of N48 billion standing to the credit of the state. The money was earned under the watch of Dr Ikpeazu. “The implication is that the current administration can commence drawing down on that facility from day one to construct critical roads in Abia State and will not have to repay the money over the pendency of its tenure, assuming it is up to eight years. “African Development Bank facility of $200 million processed by the Ikpeazu administration is also ready for the new administration to access for construction of rural roads.
Former Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu “Before the exit of Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu from office, Abia State Government and the office of the accountant general of the federation reconciled their accounts with N6 billion standing to the credit of the state. “What that also says is that the Ikpeazu administration was not owing the federal government but rather it was FGN that owed the state. The current administration has access to that additional fund of N6 billion. “While we are still expecting the new administration to give the detailed composition of the alleged debts left behind by the Ikpeazu administration, it is safe to say that they are mostly long-term development facilities, contractor debts, and possibly outstanding payments to pensioners and salary earners. “It is my candid view that the new administration in the state can smoothly take off and service state liabilities with what it has without screaming or yelling.”
“Ortom did nothing unlawful leaving with official vehicles” ― Aide tells Hyacinth Alia
Terver Akase, an aide to the former governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has cautioned the newly elected governor of the State, Hyacinth Alia over his comment that his principal left office with all official vehicles allocated to him. Akase who countered the governor in a statement on Friday said that Ortom did nothing unlawful leaving with the vehicles and according to him, it was the decision of the state executive council to allow Ortom, his deputy and officials to go with the vehicles allocated to them. Former governor of Benue State, Samuel OrtomRecall that Hyacinth Alia, Benue governor who won the 2023 governorship election in the state under the All Progressives Congress, APC, had accused Ortom’s administration of looting, alleging that he “met no single car or truck in the government house”. Reacting to Hyacinth Alia’s statement, Akase said “In his latest outing, the governor has accused his predecessor of carrying out recruitment into the civil service without due process; handing to him an empty treasury and looting government vehicles, among several other unfounded accusations,” Akase said. “The present administration may wish to be informed that it was the decision of the Benue state executive council that government officials, including the governor and his deputy, be given waivers to enable them to go with the official vehicles allocated to them. “Governor Ortom, therefore, did nothing unlawful by leaving office with the official vehicles allocated to him. “It is a tradition that an outgoing governor leaves with vehicles given to him. Perhaps we should add that the Ortom administration offered to buy vehicles for the incoming government but the present governor declined, saying that he would prefer to buy vehicles for his administration after the inauguration.” On the issue of sacked appointees and workers, Akase said Ortom’s government followed due process in recruiting the workers. “While we won’t go into a war of words with the governor despite the media trial, it is pertinent to clarify that the Ortom administration followed due process in recruiting the workers whom the present government sacked a few days ago,” he said. “Vacancies were duly advertised in national newspapers and those who applied for the jobs were properly interviewed/screened and the successful ones were given appointment letters as required by civil service rules.
The present governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia “Promotions were also carried out according to the laid down service regulations. “We expected the Alia administration to specifically point out the areas where it claimed that due process was not followed in the recruitments, instead of making sweeping statements and spurious generalisations.”

Included in that tally are 16 goals and 16 assists from 31 Ligue 1 appearances. Messi after a match for PSG. Source: Getty While the 35-year-old won the World Cup with Argentina last December, his time at PSG has been far from an unmitigated success. He arrived at PSG in August 2021, joining a star-studded team that includes Kylian Mbappé and Neymar, with the hope of winning the club’s first Champions League title. Although PSG clinched their 11th Ligue 1 title last weekend, in March they were once again knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16. In recent weeks, Messi has received abuse from some sections of PSG fans, and last month the club suspended him following an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia. Messi has a commercial contract with Saudi Arabia to promote tourism and has been linked with a lucrative move there at the end of the season. There has also been talk of a return to Barcelona, where he spent the majority of his career and won 10 La Liga titles and the Champions League on four occasions. Messi has also been linked with a move to David Beckham’s MLS team, Inter Miami.
