Social media Is The New Resume…

Social media Is The New Resume...

When I was in school, I recall snapping a picture with an animal tongue filter on Snapchat and used it as my display picture. My dad saw this picture and was mad at me. He asked me to delete the picture and never post such picture again on social media. I didn’t just see the sense in that, even after explaining to me that the image I was portraying to the world isn’t my real identity, and that these images can affect me in the future. I thought he was just making a mountain out of a mole hill, but I obeyed for obedience’s sake. However, with the passage of time, I have come to see sense in what my dad was trying to teach me. In the world today, people, especially young ones, goof on social media without knowing that there are consequences to their actions. They share immoral images of themselves in the name of being woke and trendy. They abuse people who do not share the same opinion with them on matters, and they are ready to even fight and rain curses on fellow social media users for petty reasons like not liking the same celebrity as them. When I see such goofing, my heart bleeds. I agree that not many people have a proper orientation especially when it comes to social media usage. They operate with the mindset that they own their phones and subscribe for themselves; hence, they have the right to do as they please. To them, it’s all jokes and games. But that is not true. Recently in 2022, a Ghanian actress, by name, Yvonne Nelson tweeted about a young man that came for a job interview and along the line of the interview, she inquired for the young man’s Twitter handle, and it appears she had blocked him on her page due to his negative comment in the past. Same thing happened in 2022 to another young man who lost a banking job because he had dragged and trolled that bank in the past. Never did they thought for once that time will come when their juvenile delinquencies will deny them something good in life. Social media, in many ways, has replaced the traditional CV or resume. Several social media sites now enable employees to conduct in-depth background checks on their applicant profiles, and according to research, about 51 of these public posts that people put out there, are used to determine whether a candidate is qualified for a job role or not and if the individual’s social media activities match the company’s code of conduct. Social media has equally become a marketplace where people can trade equally, build brands, get jobs, and start businesses. There is someone or people watching you that may have the power to change your status and life forever. But the question is, what do they see when they conduct background check on your social media activities? What kind of person are you telling them you are? What image are you portraying about yourself? When people google your name, what will they see? Social media is not all about the beautiful selfies, the banters, and the jokes. Times have changed now. The era of getting a job solely on your overwhelming credentials and impressive answers during interview is gone. Social media is now the new CV. Trade with caution, young ones.

Why I don’t post my husband on social media

GistReel

Prominent skit maker and brand influencer, Bukunmi Adeaga Ilori, popularly known as Kiekie, has opened up about her decision to keep her husband off her social media platforms. Despite speculation surrounding her marriage, Kiekie clarified that her choice was not driven by a desire to conceal her husband but rather because her Instagram page primarily serves as a business platform.

Kiekie

During an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Kiekie emphasized that her husband is not involved in her business and does not receive a salary from her. Consequently, she sees no need to showcase him on her social media accounts, which she considers to be avenues for promoting her professional endeavors. The skit maker, who is also an actress, revealed that she only posted about her husband during her daughter’s pregnancy because he played a significant role in that journey. She explained; “I’m pregnant and I wanted to share it…It was a collaboration, and he’s alive, and we’re not fighting, so why not.” When asked about her husband’s birthdays, Kiekie responded by saying that she does not see the need to post about him on those occasions since he is not even active on Instagram. She expressed that she finds it more meaningful to wish him privately, as he is physically present in her life. Furthermore, Kiekie shared that the next time she might share photos of her husband would be when they have another child. She jokingly added that it might be a while before her followers see him again, implying that such updates will be infrequent.   See below;

Ghanaian social media influencer, Hajia4Reall, extradited to the US for alleged $2 million romance scam

GistReel

Ghanaian social media influencer Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia4Reall, has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States on charges of allegedly defrauding older, single American individuals in a deceptive lonely hearts scam. The 30-year-old appeared in Manhattan federal court, where prosecutors detailed her involvement in a series of romance schemes targeting vulnerable victims.

Mona Faiz Montrage

According to federal prosecutors, Montrage, along with a group of con artists from West Africa, engaged in a long-running operation that spanned from 2013 to 2019. The scammers assumed fake identities and used various communication channels, including emails, texts, and social media messages, to deceive their targets into believing they were in relationships with them. Once trust was established, the victims were coerced into transferring money under false pretenses, such as assisting with gold transportation, resolving fictitious FBI investigations, or supporting fake US Army officers in Afghanistan. One specific case cited in court documents involved Montrage allegedly convincing a victim to send $89,000 through 82 wire transfers, claiming the funds would aid her father’s farm in Ghana.

The victim was further deceived with a tribal marriage certificate, leading them to believe they were married after a series of phone conversations conducted using Montrage’s real identity. Prosecutors also allege that she received money from several other victims who were swindled by scammers within her network.

Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams expressed the devastating impact of such romance scams, particularly on older Americans. He stated, “These scams can be both financially and emotionally devastating for vulnerable victims.” Williams commended the efforts of law enforcement partners in apprehending Montrage abroad and ensuring she faces justice in the United States. Montrage has been charged with wire fraud, money laundering, receipt of stolen money, and conspiracy. If convicted on the top charge, she could face up to 20 years in prison. During her court appearance, she pleaded not guilty and is expected to be released on $500,000 bond, subject to home detention at her aunt’s residence in New Jersey. Her movements will be restricted to certain parts of New York and New Jersey pending the outcome of the case.

Adam Cortez, Montrage’s attorney, commented on the limited information available regarding the alleged victims and stated, “At this time all we know is that there are six alleged victims, and only two dealt with a woman, and only one of them claims that he dealt with Ms. Montrage.” Cortez indicated that he would require additional information and evidence from the prosecutors before providing further comment on the case.

“Fighting on social media can’t change court verdict” — Reno Omokri to party supporters

GistReel

reno omokri Political activist, Reno Omokri, cautions opposition parties against engaging in social media fights as he believes it would not influence the court decisions made by election petition tribunals. This comes ahead of the presidential election petitions court fixed for Monday, May 8 for the hearing of the petitions challenging Bola Tinubu‘s emergence as the president-elect. Reno Omokri urged opposition parties to pursue peace while he emphasized that the court’s declaration of the President would determine the future of the country. He made this known on Twitter on Saturday where he encouraged Nigerians to identify a cause that they can contribute to for the betterment of the nation. “Realise and accept that elections are over. The only hope for a change in who the next President will be is the courts. Fighting supporters of other parties on social media won’t affect the judicial outcome. So, let us heal and behave like human beings with a common destiny. The election brought about identities like Obidients, BATists, and Kwankwasiyya. Now, we need to step out of that limited circle and resume our original identity as Nigerians. Instead of abuse, let us amuse each other. Rather than curse, let us chart a new cause,” he added.
