A UK-based Nigerian student, John Nwadiaju, bags an 11-month prison sentence and is suspended for one year for violently assaulting and abusing his wife, Kosisochukwu Echem. John who is a student at Bangor University in North Wales, United Kingdom, was on Friday handed the sentence, along with 250 hours of unpaid work by the Caernarfon Crown Court. According to the North Wales Chronicle, Nwadiaju and Echem married in Nigeria in April 2022 but separated in August 2022 following reports of domestic abuse and violence. Echem visited him in Bangor in the hope of reconciliation, but Nwadiaju allegedly took her passport and Personal Independence Payment card and repeatedly assaulted her. Police arrested him at the scene, and bloodstains were found on his person and property. Despite claiming self-defence, Nwadiaju was found guilty, and Judge Nicola Saffman sentenced him to 11 months in prison, suspended for one year, and ordered him to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work.

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has been sentenced to 9 years and 8 months in prison by a UK court, alongside his wife and a medical middleman. He was found guilty in a landmark modern slavery case for his involvement in a plot to traffic a young man to the UK to harvest his organs for their sick daughter. Along with his wife and a medical middleman, they were found guilty in March at the Old Bailey. The victim, a poor street trader in Lagos, was brought to the UK to provide a kidney for the Ekweremadus’ daughter, but he fled in fear and reported what had happened to the police. During the televised sentencing, Justice Johnson acknowledged Ike Ekweremadu’s “substantial fall from grace” as he handed down the sentence. Beatrice Ekweremadu received a sentence of four years and six months, while Obeta was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

During the the allegations which had trailed the death of IVD’s wife, Blessing had taken it upon herself to defend him as people began suspecting him of his wife’s death. It would also be recalled that the self-proclaimed therapist had been arrested and tried and found guilty of cyberbullying.

She recently regained her freedom after spending weeks in prison and having paid a bail fee of 10 million naira. Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Nigerian singer, Tems, has recounted how the Grammy winner conducted praise and worship in her prison cell. According to Muyiwa, the singer carried out the commendable act when she was detained by the Uganda police alongside Omah Lay in 2020.

He said: “Entering prison, as a woman, Tems, they [prison warders] took her to the female section. I was just worried about her. I was not with her. I was just wondering what the hell is going on [with her?]. “I will come to find out that Tems conducted praise and worship in a whole prison cell. Everybody was singing with her. She took over the whole prison.”

The anti-Tinubu passenger, Obiajulu Ujah, will remain there for one month while medical experts assess his mental health. Ujah is currently facing a criminal charge in case number CR/08/23, filed by the Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. Magistrate Abdulazeel Ismail Muhammed of the FCT Magistrate Court ruled on Thursday in Zuba Magisterial District. “Having scrutinized the medical report dated 17th day of April 2023 and signed by Dr Olusegun Shoyombo, a consultant psychiatrist, I am of the opinion that the defendant cannot defend himself,” he said. Muhammed utilized Section 278(3) & (4) of the ACJA, 2015 due to the urgent need for medical attention. The section states that if the court is unconvinced of the defendant’s ability to defend themselves, the trial will be postponed, and the individual may be remanded for a maximum of one month. During this remand, a medical officer will oversee the defendant and provide a written assessment of their mental state before the end of the period. If the medical officer is unable to form a definite opinion, they will inform the court and request a further remand of up to three months. “From all these, the need to prevent the risk of jumping treatment and having found that Kuje Correctional Facility has the requisite medical personnel, I hereby order that the defendant be remanded for medical observation for one month,” Muhammed said. According to the magistrate, the Federal Government of Nigeria will bear the cost of the necessary medical treatment for the defendant, as provided by the medical personnel.

Although she was granted bail of 10 million naira, the socialite has still not left the correction center. Queen Rita took to social media to share some of the bail conditions that would need to be fulfilled if she’s to be granted bail.

According to Queen Rita, aside from the 10 million naira bail, Blessing CEO is required to provide two sureties who also have 10 million naira in their accounts. These two sureties must be influential people who have houses in highbrow areas in Lagos like Lekki, Banana Island, Ikoyi etc. She also revealed that the sureties would have to submit their statement of account as well as their international passports for inspection. The Bishop of Lagos-based Reign Christian Ministry, Daniel Oluwefeyiropo (also known as Feyi), has been placed in Kirikiri prison after being arraigned for allegedly raping two members of his church.

On Monday, he was brought before Justice Ramon Oshodi at the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court. Oluwafeyiropo had previously been charged with two counts of rape, but he pleaded not guilty. The alleged incidents occurred in June 2020 at Ikota Villa Estate in Lekki, Lagos, and according to the prosecution, violated Sections 260 (2) of the Criminal Laws of  2015. Justice Oshodi granted the defendant ₦20 million bail and required two sureties to post bail for him. “The original document of the landed property must be submitted the chief registrar of Lagos State. The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must have three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State,” he said. The judge additionally ordered Oluwafeyiropo to hand over his international passport to the chief registrar of the court and expedited the trial.

This followed her arrest by the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon on Thursday, 30th of March. During her arraignment, the prosecution counsel, Rotshang Faith Dimka of the Force Headquarters in Abuja, claimed that on October 16, 2022, Blessing intentionally sent messages through her Instagram handle @officialblessingceo to bully, threaten, and harass Folashade Samuels, also known as Mamajazz, the younger sister of the late Bimbo Ogbonna, wife of automobile businessman Ikechukwu Ogbonna, also known as IVD. The prosecution further alleged that Blessing used her Instagram handle to damage the reputation of Folashade Samuels and the late Bimbo Ogbonna by exposing them to hatred, contempt, and ridicule. According to the police, some of the messages allegedly sent by Blessing Okoro include; “Let’s ask Mamajazz where her father is??? Their father had exactly the same issue with their mother Ebele and he ran away for his dear life. IVD’s crime was that he was not man enough to run… The family of late Bimbo is after IVD’’s properties and life. Especially her elder sister Mamajazz. Bimbo and IVD are well-known people in Lagos and it’s not a hidden fact that even in their estate that Bimbo is violent. Everybody knows how she breaks a bottle on her husband’s head on a daily .. Subscribe” I will ask Mamajazz, the late Bimbo’s sister few questions…where you in talking terms with your sister before (she) died?” The court was informed by the police that the defendants had violated Section 24 (2)(a)(1) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015, Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act, and Section 33 of the NFVCB Act, 2004. Upon hearing the charges, the accused pleaded not guilty. Justice Yelim Bogoro, who presided over the case, ordered that Blessing Okoro be held in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) until May 30 when her bail application would be heard.

Following their guilty verdict delivered by Mr Justice Johnson on March 23rd, the duo was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on May 5. The accusations were also faced by a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, and the Ekweremadus’ daughter, Sonia, who was later cleared of charges. Ike Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested after a young man from Lagos reported their alleged plans to harvest his organ, for which he was to be rewarded £80,000 for donating a kidney to Sonia in a private procedure at the Royal Free Hospital in London. The harvesting of organs falls under the umbrella of human trafficking, which is prohibited by the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015. The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 According to the human trafficking offence in Section 2 Subsection 1 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015, a person commits an offence if the person arranges or facilitates the travel of another person (“V”) with a view to V being exploited. Subsection 2 states that it is irrelevant whether V consents to the travel (whether V is an adult or a child). In Section 2 Subsection 7, the law stated that “a person who is not a UK national commits an offence under this section if any part of the arranging or facilitating takes place in the United Kingdom, or the travel consists of arrival in or entry into, departure from, or travel within, the United Kingdom.” The penalties under the Act stated in Section 5 Subsection that a person guilty of an offence under section 1 or 2 is liable, (a)on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for life; (b)on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or a fine or both. In Section 5 Subsection 2, a person guilty of an offence under Section 4 is liable (unless Subsection 3 applies), (a)on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years; (b)on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or a fine or both. Subsection 3 states that where the offence under Section 4 is committed by kidnapping or false imprisonment, a person guilty of that offence is liable, on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for life.

A video making the rounds on social media captured the narration of a man who claimed he alongside 11 others was recently released from Kikiri Prison. Haruna alleged that he was abandoned without being tried until a few days before the gubernatorial election.
