"114% salary increase for Tinubu, Shettima not appropriate now" ― Peter Obi

The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate,  Peter Obi has condemned the alleged recent approval of a 114 per cent increase in the salaries of elected politicians, including the President, vice president, governors, lawmakers, as well as judicial and public office holders by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC. Obi lamented that this is not the appropriate time for such salary increment if it is necessary, arguing that Nigerians are struggling with many harsh economic realities, and with over 130 million Nigerians living in poverty.

"114% salary increase for Tinubu, Shettima not appropriate now" ― Peter Obi

Peter Obi In a post via his verified Twitter handle on Thursday, Obi argued that “one would have expected the leaders and public officeholders to focus on cutting the cost of governance and alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians”. He added that leaders should prioritize what affects the masses and those on the lower strata of society over themselves. Obi wrote, “I learnt with great reservation, the approval of a 114% increase in the salaries of elected politicians, including the President, vice president, governors, lawmakers as well as judicial and public office holders by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). “This is not the appropriate time for such salary increment if it is at all necessary. We are living in a time when an average Nigerian is struggling with many harsh economic realities, and with over 130 million Nigerians now living in poverty. This is a moment when recent reform measures by the government have increased living costs astronomically. “One would expect the leaders and public officeholders to focus on cutting the cost of governance, alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians. This moment calls for creative ways of pulling the majority out of poverty. “In the immortal words of Shakespeare’s Julius Ceaser, ‘What touches us ourself shall be last served.’ “The leaders, therefore, should prioritize what affects the masses and those on the lower strata of society over themselves. “The sacrifice, at this time in our nation, should be borne by the leaders. The increment should be reversed immediately, and the savings should be devoted to fixing education, healthcare and poverty alleviation especially in the remote rural areas.”

All of the same faith for God’s sake!!!. “Under the current dispensation, the worst, the most incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the Presidency of the Senate,” he said. Shettima added: ” Equity, justice and fairness demand that the number three citizen of this country should be Christian. “What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us. But most importantly, we should make deliberate efforts to take inclusivity in governance. “This is a young nation where every community will like to have fair representation on the dinner table of their kinsmen. “Politics is about perception, politics is about optics. He added: ” So far, the decisions that are coming out are those that will strengthen Nigeria. “We’ll see Nigeria change before our very eyes and we’re committed to being a part of that change. We assure you not just of our loyalty but the stability of the parliament.” Similarly, Jibrin said “I must begin by thanking His Excellency, the vice president for his uncommon commitment. “To the actualisation of all those that have been endorsed by the party to preside over the two chambers of the National Assembly. “Your commitment is not to us as persons, it’s to the stability and peaceful coexistence of the people and indeed the progress of this nation.”

Shettima said; “I was a child of necessity, there is no Islamisation agenda. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a Muslim who is married to a Christian, not only a Christian but a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. “Someone who has not Islamised his family, people are alluding that he has the intention to Islamise the nation.

“Politics is about perception. As we begin the formation of a new administration, I deliberately picked an Igbo man, a Catholic, to be my chief security officer. “For the purpose of inclusivity and togetherness, again I deliberately picked a northern Christian to be my ADC. Supreme Court throws out PDP’s suit against Shettima

GistReel

On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed the lawsuit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking to disqualify the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and the vice-president-elect, Kashim Shettima, from the 2023 presidential election. The apex court affirmed the eligibility of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates for the presidential race held on February 25.

Source: Google PDP’s Lawsuit Against Shettima The PDP had appealed the decision in case number SC/CV/501/2023, claiming that Tinubu should be disqualified due to Shettima’s dual nomination for both the Borno Central Senatorial seat and the Vice Presidential position. According to the PDP, this double nomination violated several sections of the Electoral Act of 2022, as amended, including Sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1) and (2). The PDP requested the court to invalidate Tinubu and Shettima’s candidacies and also asked for an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove their names from the list of nominated or sponsored candidates eligible to participate in the presidential election. Opposing the plaintiff’s argument, Lateef Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), contended that the PDP should have remained a bystander regardless of its grievances regarding how the APC nominated its candidates. “It is abundantly clear that the Appellant in the totality of its position in the instant case, is peeping and poke-nosing into the affairs of another party as a busybody and meddlesome interloper,” he said. Supreme Court’s Verdict In a unanimous decision made by a panel of five judges, the court declared that the appeal brought by the PDP to challenge the validity of the Tinubu/Shettima ticket had no merit. Justice Adamu Jauro delivered the lead judgment, upholding the previous rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had both dismissed the case. The court stated that the plaintiff did not have the legal right to interfere in the internal affairs of the APC, which had nominated Tinubu and Shettima as its candidates for the election, and thus dismissed the appeal. The court described the appeal as an intrusive and interfering action by a meddlesome outsider, emphasizing that the law does not allow a political party to meddle in the internal affairs of another party. The court agreed with the respondents’ argument that section 285 (14) (c) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and section 149 of the Electoral Act of 2022 did not give them the legal right to question Shettima’s candidature based on double nomination. The apex court held that section 84 of the Electoral Act only granted the right to challenge a party’s nomination to an aspirant who had participated in the party’s primary election. Furthermore, the court maintained that the PDP failed to prove that its rights were threatened and could not establish the harm it suffered as a result of the APC’s nomination. Moreover, the apex court criticized the PDP for filing a frivolous appeal. The court affirmed that the evidence presented indicated that Shettima had properly withdrawn as the APC candidate in the Borno senatorial election on July 6, 2022. Justice Jaurosaid, “From the trial court, down to this court, it has been a waste of precious judicial time.” He admonished counsel to advise their clients “against filing this sort of suit in future.” It further awarded in favour of the respondents, the sum of  N2 Million damages against the PDP.

“Peter Obi can only become President in Igboland, not in Nigeria” – Kashim Shettima blows hot

"Peter Obi can only become President in Igboland, not in Nigeria" – Kashim Shettima blows hot

Kashim Shettima, the vice presidential candidate of the APC, has declared that Peter Obi cannot emerge the president of Nigeria.
Shettima has maintained that the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate can only be president in Igbo land.

The vice presidential candidate said this in an interview on Channels TV on Friday July 15.
He said:
“The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi has no political base and structure to win the next coming election in 2023. As far as i am concerned he’s politically structureless with little or no experience to lead this country
Nigeria requires a technocrat and a sound Administrator who will continue from where President Muhammadu Buhari stopped not someone who will come to take us back in the era of PDP. Nigerians don’t want that.
Our Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the right person needed for this position in a time like this. He’s a unifier, an Administrator, a technocrat name it. That is why Nigerians both old and young are rallying round him to ensure that he wins the forth coming election.
“Presidential position is not for the unprepared neither is it an all comers affairs. Peter Obi can only become a President in Igboland but definitely not in Nigeria. Nigeria is too big for him to handle. He has no leadership ideology nor experiences like President Muhammadu and our incoming President in the person of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Nice men like Osinbajo don’t make good leaders, they should be selling popcorn and ice cream – Former governor of Borno, Kashim Shettima

Senator Kassim Shettima has described the vice president of Nigeria, Yemi Osibanjo as a kind man, but that quality isn’t enough to qualify him as a presidential candidate in 2023.
The senator had said this on Friday night while speaking in an interview with Channels TV.

Shettima believes that the vice president stands no chance to defeat Abubakar Atiku of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at the polls.

The senator, who is representing Borno Central Senatorial District, says that Osibanjo is a nice man but that doesn’t make one a good leader.
He said;
“Nobody has ever doubted the competence of Professor Osinbajo, but we believe that in terms of intellectual capacity, and someone who is capable of winning the election, is Bola Tinubu.
“We need someone who can match and even overshadow the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Osinbajo is a good and nice man but nice men do not make good leaders, nice men should be selling ice cream”.
