Police confirms receiving letter from INEC to probe suspended Adamawa REC

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed receiving a letter from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asking it to investigate suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Hudu Yunusa Ari over his role in the state’s governorship election.

Ari was suspended by the electoral commission after he declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru as the winner while results were yet to be fully collated. The police have now confirmed that they received INEC’s letter demanding Yunusa-Ari’s probe. NPF’s spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement; “The Nigeria Police Force is in receipt of a letter dated 18th April 2023 from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) detailing the alleged impropriety of the actions of one Barr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), during the recently concluded supplementary elections and called on the Police to investigate and possibly prosecute the REC for his actions. “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR, has directed an investigative team to work in collaboration with the INEC to expedite action on the contents of the letter. “The Inspector-General of Police while expressing the commitment of the NPF to upholding democratic values, assures Nigerians and the international community, that the Police will leave no stone unturned in unraveling the remote causes of the unwholesome conduct of the REC as well as ensure that all persons fingered in the course of investigations are brought to book.”

INEC has directed the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa, to stay away from the state office.

In a letter dated April 17, 2023, and addressed to the Adamawa State REC, the commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony directed the administrative secretary to take full charge. “I hereby convey the Commission’s decision that you (Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Adamawa State should stay away from the commission’s office in Adamawa State immediately until further notice. The Administrative Secretary has been directed to take full charge of INEC, Adamawa State with immediate effect,” the letter reads in part. Recall that the REC on Sunday morning, April 16, controversially declared Aishatu Dahiru Binani, the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner of the Adamawa state governorship election while the results collation process was not completed. The lyrics of the song suggest that the INEC chairman engaged in fraudulent activities during the recently concluded general election. Falz alongside Vector also included some of the excuses given by INEC for the delay in uploading the presidential results on its portal on February 25. The music video also portrays some irregularities committed by security operatives during the election, as well as the shooting of youths during the #EndSARS protest in 2020.

This comes as APC’S candidate, Senator Aishatu Dahiru popularly known as Binani scored 390, 275 while the incumbent, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of PDP, polled 421,524. INEC declared the election inconclusive due to the margin of votes. They are now collating the final results for the announcement of the winner. With this result, the APC candidate Aisha Binani has eight LGAs while Gov Umaru Fintiri has won 13 LGAs from the 21 in the state. The APC agents, who are displeased by this have been advised to take to the appropriate channel for their grievances.

According to the declaration of INEC, the votes Abba Yusif pulled to defeat the incumbent deputy governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna was 1, 019, 602 while the latter also pulled 890,705 votes. The governorship candidate for the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), Abba Kabir Yusuf won Kano State with 128,995 votes. “That Abba, Kabir Yusuf having scored the highest number of votes and having satisfied the requirements of the law is returned elected dated this day 20, March 2023,” declared the Professor.
