The Lagos Government in a statement released on their site says that the movie “Gangs of Lagos” has portrayed a misrepresentation of the Lagos culture and also displays the culture of Lagos State in a derogatory manner. The statement reads; “A release signed by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Pharm. (Mrs.) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf said the Ministry, being the regulatory body and custodian of the culture of Lagos State, views the film/series as a mockery of the Heritage of Lagos. “The Commissioner expressed her disappointment with the promoters of the film, Jade Osiberu, and Kemi Akindoju, for portraying the Eyo Masquerade as a gun-wielding villain while adorning the full traditional regalia.” “We are of the opinion that the production of the film ‘The Gang of Lagos’ is very unprofessional and misleading while its content is derogatory of our culture, with the intention to desecrate the revered heritage of the people of Lagos. It is an unjust profiling of a people and culture as being barbaric and nefarious. It depicts a gang of murderers rampaging across the State”.

"I drank strong alcohol, went to graveyard to play role in Gangs of Lagos" — Tobi Bakre

Tobi Bakre

Speaking about his experience in playing the character, Tobi shared that it was a challenging role for him because he had to tear down his mental walls and be vulnerable. He explained that as guys, they build walls and prepare for sad outcomes in life, but in this movie, he had to be vulnerable and emotional. To prepare for some of the emotional scenes, Tobi shared that he drank two plastic herbal bitters within five minutes and listened to sad music, including the emotional song ‘Celia’ by Tiwa Savage. He explained that he was not trying to fake his emotions but needed to be actually sad and in the scenario of the character.

Gangs of Lagos

“For “Gangs of Lagos’, that was challenging because like for the first time… you know as guys now, we build so many walls like you are ready for all the possible sad outcomes in life mentally. Like you don’t know it but… I was now playing the role of a strong guy but then in the same movie, he had moments when he had to be vulnerable. Bro, I had the toughest time. I had to tear my walls down. “You know those plastic [herbal bitters] drinks na? I drank two within the space of five minutes. I just felt like I drank water because I didn’t feel anything. I was listening to the saddest music. This is the song I always remember from Gangs of Lagos, the Celia song by Tiwa Savage. It is a very emotional song. I wasn’t trying to fake it [my role]. I needed to be actually sad, I needed to be there. So, I was putting myself in the scenario of this character. “I was self-reflecting. There was a graveyard right in front of where we were shooting. So my head was in different places. find eventually, we shot that scene. after we shot it, and they said ‘cut’, everyone stayed quiet. find people in the background were sobbing. It was almost as if for that moment everybody forgot that we were acting and some people were actually tearing up. “It [the character] leads sometimes like my wife now when I got home initially… Hardly, anger is the last emotion you can get but my fuss became shorter. On the road I’m driving, my fuss is a bit shorter because of this character I’m currently infusing. So, after the whole thing, I had to just ease out”. He said.

Sunday Dare 21 billion naira Lagos National Stadium renovation

He revealed this via his Twitter page while he giving an update on the work which is currently on going at the venue. “The National Stadium Surulere, Lagos: Just the Facts. Not Fallacies. Upon assumption of office in 2019, I met the National Stadium in a completely run down state. Left to rot for almost 17 plus years. No renovations (or) upgrades. Illegal occupants had taken over. The Illegal occupants had distorted the original plan. We immediately set down to work at the ministry. First, the task force removed all illegal occupants and locked out miscreants. Next we sought funding from private partners as budget allocation was insufficient.

Old, damaged and clogged up water drainage system gutted out and new ones installed. Second phase of the tartan tracks installed; awaiting the final phase, followed by lanes marking. One digital score board as originally fitted into stadium has been fully installed.” Mr Dare shared some photos which captured the current state of the stadium and what it had been prior to his project.

“This is what we met and we started work on the main bowl. Our target was to fix three of the 15 critical aspects of the Surulere stadium. The pitch, scoreboard and tartan tracks. We faced delays but we never stopped. 80 per cent of these three works have been completed.

What is needed to fix the National Stadium Surulere after 17 plus years of neglect is in excess of 21 billion naira, about 45 million dollars, of which we have just about 500m naira from private and government funding. There is a limit to what can be fixed.”
