The police disclosed that about 90 percent sex workers arrested were Nigerians while the rest were Ghanaians and others from other foreign nationals. “Yesterday, I directed the police to do an operation in town, and so they started the first operation to arrest all those prostitutes who come to our town. We managed to arrest about 50 people, and we will arraign them before the court,” he said. “About 90 percent are Nigerians. There are Ghanaians. They are coming here to dent the good image of Koforidua. Everybody who is doing that business will not be tolerated. Some may be living in your house. If you know such persons and cannot go to the police station, call me,” “Prostitution in Koforidua will not be tolerated, and we urge you to help us to deal with the act in the town,” the MP added.

It is the police who, rather than taking this simple and straightforward step, have decided to create a circus and make a ‘national emergency’ of the matter. “Now that Mr Kuti has been put in manacles and taken on parade from one police station to another and from one location to the other across Lagos State since Monday, May 15, when exactly is he going to be charged for, as you put it in your statement, ‘attacking and slapping a police officer in uniform?’ “That should not be too much for a suspect to expect. I do hope that Lough as a lawyer and indeed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria counselling the police on this matter will obey the order of the magistrate’s court to send the case file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions for legal evaluation and possible charge and prosecution before a court of law.”

Nigerian Police allegedly asks court for 21 days to detain Seun Kuti

The Lagos State Police Command has asked Court to remand Seun Kuti for 21 days in detention as the police officer he slapped is allegedly in coma at an undisclosed hospital. A source disclosed to SaharaReporters that Seun Kuti was secretly arraigned without notifying his lawyers at the Yaba magistrate court.

“The police have moved Seun Kuti to the Yaba Magistrate Court for arraignment without notifying his lawyers. The magistrate is sitting by 12noon, but Seun and his lawyers are already in court,” the source said. According to SaharaReporters, a witness in the court said; “The Chief Magistrate Mrs, Adeola Olatunbosun Magistrate Court 1 Yaba took a statement from the Nigerian police applying to detain Seun Kuti for 21 days, claiming the policeman he allegedly assaulted is in a coma at an undisclosed hospital. However, Kuti’s lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika countered that the police already stated publicly that the police officer trailed and went to Seun’s house and accepted N12,000 to repair his car. It also emerged that the DCP in Panti had gone to meet the Magistrate earlier before secretly moving Seun to the court without notifying his lawyer. They also accused Seun of not writing a statement, but Olumide-Fusika countered that he was there when Seun wrote a statement. The Chief Magistrate decided to go on recess to ‘study the file.” Seun Kuti, who spoke through his lawyer, Olumide Fusikan, SAN said that he would defend himself against Hundeyin’s investigative findings at the right time. Kuti turned himself in on Monday following the allegation that he assaulted a Police officer in a video making its rounds on social media.

Popular Nigerian singer, Seun Kuti, has been granted bail by the chief magistrate court in Yaba, Lagos state. The singer was granted bail on Tuesday, May 16. The court also directed police to investigate the alleged attack on an officer within 48 hours.

Seun Kuti’s car was halted on the Third Mainland Bridge and the son of the famed Fela Kuti was detained for slapping an officer. But the defence counsel, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), begged the court not to remand his client. Seun had claimed that the police officer threatened his life and that of his family.
