Tinubu more intelligent than I thought ― Labour Party's Lawmaker-elect

As many elected leaders across the country continue to meet with President Bola Tinubu, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, a House of Representatives Member-elect, Thursday expressed optimism that the President would serve Nigeria well, saying that he never knew he was very intelligent until he met him and heard him talk. The lawmaker-elect in a short interview with Channels TV after he met with the President in Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, stated that Tinubu’s administration would make  Nigeria better.

Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, a House of Representatives Member-elect. He said, “Today is my best day. I am so happy that I am an elected member. Seeing my president talking. In fact I never knew that this man is so intelligent. “I never knew that this man is so prepared to serve this country. I saw the love, the charisma, the belief that Nigeria is going to be a better nation”. Ogah was elected under the platform of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election to represent the Isiuakwato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State at the House of Representatives. Sharing a clip of Ogah’s short interview with Channels TV on Twitter, a former Minister of State for Employment, Festus Keyamo wrote, “Politics is over and serious governance begins. Peter Mbah meets Tinubu, pleads for Nnamdi Kanu’s release

Gov of Enugu, Mbah meets Tinubu, pleads for Nnamdi Kanu's release

As the new era of leadership begins in different parts of the country, Enugu State Governor, Barr Peter Mbah, on Thursday, met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he discussed his state’s matters and the need to release the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Mbah while addressing reporters, described his meeting with Tinubu as heartwarming,  and according to him, partnership and collaboration with Tinubu’s administration were critical to actualising his administration’s agenda for Enugu State. He said, “I came and frankly I brought to the President, the warm greetings and best wishes from the government and the people of Enugu state. “But, above all, you may also know already that we made massive campaign promises to the people of Enugu. And we also have expressed a humongous vision. “We’ve taken a bold view of what the new government could achieve in the next four years, in terms of growing our economy from the current levels to $30 billion. “And one of our core governance philosophies is to collaborate and to have partnership; and we have identified the federal government as our core partner. “A lot of people do not know, but we have huge mineral resources in Enugu State. And these resources are sitting under our ground, not being productive. So, we believe with the partnership we’re trying to build with the federal government, we’re able to transform these assets into productive assets. “Of course, you know that the growth level we have proposed is one that is going to be driven by the private sector and private sector wants the ease of doing business; and one of the core indicators of the ease of doing business is security and infrastructure. So, we also had that conversation with Mr. President. “And finally, we also talked about the release of Nnamdi Kanu. You know, that the South East has made a collective demand to have Nnamdi Kanu released. And we basically identified with that and request Mr. President, who in his inaugural address promised the people that he’s going to engender national healing and he’s going to serve with compassion. “So we’ve basically informed him that this would serve as a pointer to his administration’s extension of hands of fellowship to Ndigbo”, he said.

Five INEC staff members will testify against Tinubu, APC.

Five INEC staff members will testify against Tinubu, APC.

In the petition that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, filed to challenge the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, five ad hoc members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been granted permission to testify as special witnesses. Subpoenaed to appear before the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, were members of the INEC ad hoc staff who were involved in the disputed presidential election results. In the joint petition he filed with his party, Atiku, who finished second in the presidential race that took place on February 25, claimed that the election was rigged in favor of President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. In his 66-page petition, the former vice president claimed that the electoral commission had installed a third-party device that was used, according to him, to alter the presidential election results in favor of the APC and its candidate, Bola Tinubu. He also said that INEC had replaced Mr. Chidi Nwafor, its in-house ICT expert, with an IT consultant who helped it install the third-party mechanism before the election. Atiku claims that the aforementioned IT consultant, Mr. Suleiman Farouk, ensured that the device served as an intermediary between the Device Management System, or DMS, and the IRev Portal. He told the court that the DMS was the software that allowed Mr. Farouk, INEC’s IT Security Consultant, to control, monitor, and filter data sent from the BVAS devices to the electronic collation system and the IRev platform from a distance. “For the purpose of the election, the 1st respondent, INEC, hired Tinubu, a 2nd respondent appointee, to manage and supervise the sensitive ICT department of the 1st respondent. “The petitioners contend and shall lead evidence to show that the first respondent, contrary to the original design of the BVAS machine to upload data directly to the electronic collation system and the IReV portal, devised and installed an intervening third-party device (Device Management System) that, in its normal use, is meant to secure and administer the first respondent’s technological ecosystem for the elections but was used to intercept the results, quarantine and warehouse them, and filter them before releasing them to the IRe “The First Respondent manipulated the Election results in favor of the Second and Third Respondents by utilizing the aforementioned Device Management System.
The petitioners added, “The petitioners state and shall lead expert evidence to show the critical components of the 1st Respondent’s Information and Communications Technology, ICT, including but not limited to the BVAS, which is an Android Device manufactured by Emperor Technologies China and supplied to the 1st Respondent by Activate Nigeria Limited.” The petitioners also stated that they would present expert evidence to support their claims. “As a result, lead counsel for the petitioners, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, informed the court at the resumed proceedings in the petition yesterday that his clients had subpoenaed five INEC ad-hoc staff members who were involved in the conduct of the election to appear as witnesses and to also tender sensitive materials in evidence. He added that of the five observers, three of them were in court. However, lead counsel for the INEC, Mr. Abubakar Mahmood, SAN, raised an objection as soon as the first subpoenaed ad-hoc staff was summoned into the courtroom and mounted the witness box. Mahmood, SAN, INEC’s attorney, informed the court that he was only served with the witness statements a few minutes before the proceedings began, insisting that he would need time to review the documents in order to effectively cross-examine the witnesses.
Moreover, INEC’s attorney said there was likewise the requirement for him to return to the Commission to check and affirm the personalities of the observers in order to learn in the event that they for sure filled in as impromptu staff during the political race. Both Boss Associated Olujinmi, SAN, who showed up for President Tinubu, as well as direction for the APC, Ruler Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, fell in line with the place of the INEC. The respondents kept up with that the would require time to concentrate on articulations of the observers that was served on them by the solicitors.
Even though the five-member panel, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, initially chose a 30-minute standoff to allow the respondents to examine the statements, it later deferred further proceedings in the matter until Thursday to allow INEC’s attorney to conduct his internal investigation.
Counsel for the petitioners presented certified copies of the presidential election results from 10 local government areas (LGAs) in Kogi State earlier in the proceeding. He also presented Mr. Ndubuisi Nwobu, Chairman of the PDP in Anambra state, as the eleventh witness in the case. During the election, Nwobu told the court that he was the PDP’s state collation officer. He also said that the election results were not uploaded to INEC’s I-Rev portal in real time in about 30 of the polling places he visited.
The witness told the court that officials from INEC made him sign the election result because they said they wouldn’t give him a copy unless he signed it. As per him, “Each work made to transfer the outcomes to the I-Fire up entrance fizzled. Witnesses said that “magic started happening at the ward level,” and that some INEC officials would have been abused by enraged voters if he hadn’t intervened quickly. The witness, Fagbemi, SAN, said he wrote a letter after the election to complain about all the anomalies he saw and the obvious non-compliance with the Electoral Act while being cross-examined by the APC lawyer.
“My objection was not about the BVAs, but rather that results were not transferred to the I-Fire up entrance as we were guaranteed broadly by the INEC director,” the observer added. Even as he requested the cancellation of the Certificate of Return that INEC gave to President Tinubu, Atiku is requesting, among other reliefs, that the court declare that he was the legitimate winner of the presidential election.

A video of some commercial motorcyclists in Cameroon, protesting against the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu is trending online. Previous governments had tried unsuccessfully to remove the subsidy which has kept fuel prices artificially low, although they have steadily climbed through the years. Source: Reuters In 2012, a protest known as “Occupy Nigeria” raged for weeks after then-President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to end the subsidy. Tinubu and some other big-weight politicians in the country joined the protest at the time, claiming that such subsidy does not exist. However, at his inaugural speech on May 29, Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy. In a seemingly off-the-cuff remark during his inaugural speech, Tinubu declared, “the fuel subsidy is gone,” adding that it was unsustainable. The rising costs could not be justified as resources dwindle, he said. “We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, healthcare, and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions,” Tinubu added.

Motorcyclists protesting against Tinubu in Cameroon Long lines immediately started forming at petrol stations after Tinubu’s speech, as Nigerians rushed to stock up on fuel before the impending jump in prices. Tinubu’s office was later forced to issue a statement clarifying that the subsidy would end by June 30, but that did not stop some filling stations from selling at higher prices. Shortly after the announcement was made, state-owned oil firm Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) confirmed that there’s been an adjustment in the retail price of fuel in the country. The adjustment saw fuel sell at above N450 in some states in the country. Days after NNPC confirmed that fuel subsidy has indeed been removed, some commercial motorcyclists in Garoua, Cameroon, protested against the development. They expressed their dissatisfaction in a blend of Fulfulde and French, criticizing President Tinubu. The video which went viral shortly after it was shared, has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. It also lends credence to claims of Nigeria’s subsidized fuel being stolen and taken to other countries where they are resold for more profit. Buhari’s Mistakes Tinubu Must Avoid — Politicians Tell Nigerians

During the last presidential elections, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now president, pledged to follow in the footsteps of then-President Muhammadu Buhari, a pledge that earned both Buhari and Tinubu the butt of jokes from Rivers State’s immediate past governor, Mr Nyesom Wike. Tinubu took office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, certified him the winner of the election. However, prominent Nigerians have advised the president to be mindful of some of his predecessor’s erroneous steps, which he must avoid to heal the harm done to the country.

Photo Credit: @officialasiwajubat Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, former President, of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must avoid his predecessor, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s, tribalistic and nepotistic tendencies. In his nominations, he must unite Nigeria by prioritizing merit, equity, and geopolitical spread over ethnic sensitivities. Buhari’s nepotism shattered Nigeria. We expected Buhari to break with the tradition of a leader surrounding himself with individuals who look and sound like him. That is not the way to bring Nigeria together. Tinubu should not follow in Tinubu’s footsteps. Also Read: Presidential Tribunal: Obi tenders 136 exhibits from 6 States Including Lagos and Edo He should demonstrate a comprehension of the economy’s workings rather than engaging in policy somersaults or economic management incompetence, as his predecessor did. He should not believe that it is OK to continue borrowing and printing money. This devalues the Nigerian naira and promotes inflation. Tinubu must be authentic and honest in his fight against corruption. Buhari pretended to be combating corruption, but there was no proof to back him up. There were more corrupt persons and corruption cases in Nigeria under his watch. Nigeria’s ranking in the corruption index has also deteriorated. Tinubu is expected to be present and not absent. In contrast to Buhari, he should demonstrate that he is in command. I applaud Tinubu’s prompt intervention in the recent standoff between the EFCC and the DSS. He gave orders quickly and calmly, unlike Buhari, who glanced away. This devalues the Nigerian naira and promotes inflation. Tinubu must be authentic and honest in his fight against corruption. Tinubu is expected to be present and not absent. In contrast to Buhari, he should demonstrate that he is in command. Ambassador Yemi Farounmbi Former President Buhari’s major footstep that President Tinubu should follow is infrastructure development. There have been attempts to develop infrastructure, such as the second Niger bridge, the establishment of the University of Medicine and Nutrition, Polytechnics and Technical Colleges of Education, the Lagos-Ibadan express road, the Enugu-Port Harcourt express road, and the Oyo-Ogbomoso-Ilorin express road. But I hope President Tinubu does not follow in Buhari’s footsteps in terms of security, because security in Nigeria degraded or completely disintegrated under his watch. What began as a North-East catastrophe evolved into a national tragedy and headache. We also hope that he will not follow in the footsteps of Buhari in his fight against corruption. We didn’t witness the active campaign against corruption that we expected to see. We hope he does not follow in Buhari’s footsteps by reducing the people to poverty, because it will appear that the people were economically healthier when he arrived eight years ago than when he left last week. We hope that the new President takes a more sensible, objective approach to dealing with the economic situation. We hope that the growing inflation is slowed so that the naira’s value rises, poverty is lessened, new jobs are created, or a favourable environment is established for people willing to work. That is what we anticipate from this President. Former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and APC Chieftain, Chief Frank Kokori If Bola Tinubu says he will follow in Buhari’s footsteps, that does not mean he will be like Buhari. He was striving for power, thus those were merely political discussions. Tinubu will pursue his approach, and you will notice changes from now on. Tinubu would not follow Buhari because he has no philosophy or achievements to be proud of. Tinubu is a clever man with his agenda, and one of the first things he should do is ensure that Nigeria operates under a truly federal system. Nigeria is being managed falsely as a result of what the military did, thus he should properly decentralize the government. Every Nigerian understands the value of security. Buhari talked about security, but he couldn’t do anything about it; he was a security failure. Tinubu should battle corruption and revive the economy. Buhari was isolated, taciturn, and surrounded himself with a clique. Buhari did not have control over his government; his ministers did. Buhari’s ministers were lords who could do whatever they wanted. No government in the world gives its ministers carte blanche.
