A former Zamfara State governor, Senator Ahmad Yerima, has said that he has no regrets about marrying his 14-year-old bride, an Egyptian wife in 2010, stating that the wife is grown now and is in the process of obtaining a master’s degree. Former governor of Zamfara, Ahmad Yerima Nigerians and people all over the world were shocked to hear that a former governor had married a minor at the national mosque in Abuja in 2010. However, while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Friday night, Yerima defended his actions, saying his marriage to his wife has not stopped her education. “She is doing her Master’s Degree now. “I told you my own daughter who was married at the age of 16, is doing her Ph.D” “Marriage does not stop people from getting educated,” Yerima said. Yerima also criticised the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2015), saying whatever act is passed at the National Assembly has to be domesticated by the state assemblies. “And once they have not done that, it’s no longer a law,” he added. The former governor alleged that former President Olusegun Obasanjo “tried to smuggle the Child Rights Act”. “He passed it at the National Assembly through some manipulations but I don’t think any state in the North domesticated it and passed it,” Yerima said. Asked to share his views on whether children deserve the right to education and other freedoms enshrined in the Child Rights Act, he argued that marriage could not stop education. Probed further on the level of education of his Egyptian wife, he said, “She’s doing her master’s degree now.” Yerima also noted that his daughter whom he had given away in marriage at the age of 16 “is doing her Ph.D. in London” On the claim that he paid $100,000 as dowry for the Egyptian girl’s hand in marriage, the former Zamfara governor noted that “it’s not dowry.” He explained further that “all other things” stipulated as conditions for the marriage were counted to arrive at that figure. “Provision of the house, provision of dowry, the dresses that she has to wear, everything [in] total,” he said. “At that time, it was just N15 million.” One can give as much as is requested of them in marriage by Sharia Law, Yerima disclosed. “Whatever you have to do in marriage is clearly stipulated under the Sharia Law. You have to provide for a house for the girl, if you’re marrying her, like, from the condition the Egyptian government’s law provides,” he said.

"I inherited only N4m from Matawalle" ― Zamfara governor

The newly elected Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal has alleged that his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, left only N4m in the state account, stating that he has been running the state affairs on loan since he became governor. The present governor of Zamfara state, Dauda Lawal He said; “I have been running the affairs of the state on debt since I assumed office as governor of Zamfara State. I met the treasury account of the state with no money. I only saw a single account with about N3 to N4 million in it. “It is about three months now and we are yet to pay the salary of the workers. If you look at all the government agencies, the power supply to the buildings has been disconnected due to the hundreds of millions of debts incurred. “The security agencies, for three months now, the allowance given to them for their daily operations has not been paid. Currently, students of senior secondary schools have not written their WAEC and NECO exams because the government is owing over one billion naira.” On the claim of N20bn being left in the state’s treasury, Lawal said; “When I heard that, I asked that they should come and show me the account, and make it public with evidence of the account where such an amount of money was kept. “If I have that amount of money the previous administration is claiming they left for the state, I will pay all workers their salaries, and provide adequate funds to the security agencies for the protection of the state. “The issue of water, there has been no water in Gusau for about four months now. I had to borrow to purchase the chemicals for the water. And pleaded with some Indians who gave the state some machines for water supply. If the state is to purchase those machines, it will cost over N200 million.” While promising to pay the civil servants their salaries before the observation of the Eid-l-Kabir festival, Lawal said “It depends on the amount of loan I’m able to secure. If what the state can afford to pay is the salary of one month, I will do my best to pay it as it is our duty to ensure that we are able to carry out our responsibilities of paying the workers what they worked for.”

APC tackles NPF, DSS over alleged raid on Matawalle’s homes in Zamfara

The Zamfara Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Department for State Services (DSS) for allegedly invading the homes of the immediate past Governor of the state, Alhaji Bello Matawalle. The condemnation is contained in a statement issued in Gusau by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Yusuf Idris.

The immediate past Governor of Zamfara state, Alhaji Bello Matawalle. The statement read, “The unlawful invasion is a gross violation of the sacred provisions of Sections 34, 35, 37, 41, 42 and 43 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. “What exactly might have warranted the invasion still remains a mystery to the good people of Zamfara State. “If the government thinks it has any case against the former governor why not charge him to court instead of resorting to such barbaric and uncivilized means,” Idris said in the statement. The APC appealed to the leadership of the NPF and the DSS “to caution their personnel against such misadventure and punish those who took part in the alleged invasion“. “We appeal to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to order the immediate investigation and prosecution of all those who carried out the illegal act of breaking into the two residences of the Zamfara State APC leader and former Gov. Bello Matawalle. “We also call on the IGP to order the immediate arrest of those personnel stationed at the two residences of the former governor. “The former governor has several times said he has nothing to hide anywhere but legal means must be deployed before carrying out any action against him or his property. “We urge the police and all sister security agencies and their personnel to tread political grounds with caution as we cannot condone such action, especially in our dear state, which has deteriorating security challenges,” the statement said. Meanwhile, the Zamfara government, in a swift reaction to the police raid, said it ordered the operatives to recover vehicles allegedly “looted“ by the erstwhile governor.

The current Governor of Zamfara state, Dauda Lawal The government, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Suleman Idris, had earlier said that the raid by the police was executed in the aftermath of a court order it obtained. “The police operatives stormed the residences of the former governor where over 40 vehicles were impounded. “The police acted on a court order and a search warrant obtained for the operation,” Suleiman said. According to him, the Zamfara government had earlier asked Matawalle and his Deputy to return all the missing vehicles within five work days. “We also lodged an official complaint with the police on the wasteful looting of valuables, including official vehicles. “Consequently, the police sought a search warrant which was duly given by the court and hence raided Matawalle’s residences in Gusau, Maradun and another unidentified hideout. “Over 40 vehicles were recovered, including three bulletproof vehicles and eight Sport Utility vehicles (SUV). “We want to reaffirm our commitment to recover all that belongs to the people. “Our common resolve is to rescue and rebuild Zamfara and recovering the proceeds of crime and public assets is a critical part of our rescue mission. “We want to call on the people of Zamfara to remain calm as we continue to record massive improvements in the areas of security and the lingering water scarcity in the state,” Suleiman said.
